Lot 157: A Portfolio of J M Heathcote Watercolours, Ambleside Mill, 73 x 50cm; Hastings, 39 x 57cm; Hastings, 29.5 x 49cm; Loch Katrine, 52 x...

Description: John Moyer Heathcote (Senior) (British, 1800-1890) A Portfolio - Ambleside Mill, 73 x 50cm; Hastings, 39 x 57cm; Hastings, 29.5 x 49cm; Loch Katrine, 52 x 76.5cm; Fishermen Mending Nets, 32 x 50.5cm; and Switzerland, Figures near a Chalet, 47 x 72cm (6) watercolours Other Notes: Folio of watercolours. This folio was by Michael in February 1984 at a sale by Holloways, in Banbury; the sale contained the residual effects of the estate of a nephew who had inherited from Claude Smith the antique/art dealer of the Broadway, St Ives. Claude had inherited the business from his father George albert Smith. There were a significant number of local Hintingdonshire paintings in the sale. The folio had 9 watercolours. On 11th April 1833 JM Heathcote married Emily Frances Colborne daughter of the 1st (and last) Baron Colborne of West Harling, Norfolk - a short distance from thetford. (Nicholas William Ridley Colborne was a Whig politician). they married in London, at St George's, Hanover Square which was close to Emily's fathers town house in Hill Street. the folio has both names inscribed with 1833. It would appear to be a wedding or engagement gift. JM Heathcote's diary for 1833 has recently been found and transcribed. There was no honeymoon holiday after the wedding, so it cannot be thought that the views in the folio represent scenes the couple visited after the wedding; they were in England all that year. Emily died in childbirth of their fifth child in 1849.
