An Ardabil design carpet, Tehran (south Persia)

Lot 130: An Ardabil design carpet, Tehran (south Persia)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: An Ardabil design carpet, Tehran (south Persia), first quarter 20th century. Tehran was made the capital of Persia by the Qajar Shahs and has remained so since. Both under the Qajars and the Pahlavis, Imperial workshops were established there, the high point of whose production was under the first Pahlavi emperor, Reza the Great, who ruled from 1926 to 1942. This magnificent carpet design is amongst the greatest examples of Tehran weaving and can be counted amongst the masterpieces of its group. The sixteen points huge sky blue central medallion, with its cream round centre, is placed on a cream field; both medallion and field are covered with an extraordinarily beautiful floral (Ardabil) design decorated with Shah Abassi pattern of incredible density. This Ardabil design is not only superbly coloured but exhibits draughtsman ship of the very highest order. The dark crimson four corners and ivory border are decorated with red and cream cartouche which are decorated with different elements. The outer border is also decorated with an arabesque, predominantly of crimson rumi or split palmettos with a scattering of tiny flower heads. It is certain that carpets of this quality must have been woven as special commissions and this carpet is a classic example of the Pahlavi period weaving art. 10 ft 8 in x 7 ft

Description: An Isfahan carpet, central Persia, mid 20th century, woven on fine wool with silk base. Isfahan is a city in central Iran and was the capital of Persia under Shah Abbas and his Safavid successors. Magnificent court carpets were woven in Isfahan in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries up to the Afghan invasion of 1722. After that, Iran's capital city was successively Mashhad, Shiraz, and finally Tehran. Isfahan regained some of its cultural and commercial prominence only in the 1920s. A very fine Tabriz carpet, Azerbaijan

Lot 135: A very fine Tabriz carpet, Azerbaijan

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A very fine Tabriz carpet, Azerbaijan (north west Persia), early 20th century. Tabriz has for centuries enjoyed a great reputation as a centre of Oriental culture. The vicissitudes of its history, its development from a naturally favored oasis at the foot of the volcano Sahand, to today's commercial centre, and descriptions of its artists and craftsmen could fill many volumes. Here, a rough outline of its cultural contribution to the Oriental carpet can best be explained by this carpet with green colouring and powerfully uncluttered decorative approach, combined with the fine quality of the knotting and excellence of materials - all indicative of an attribution to the famous master-workshop from which originated many of the greatest Tabriz works. This splendid example has a very characteristic Tabriz palette and a wonderfully spaced design, each element of which is drawn with extraordinary precision and grace. This lovely old Tabriz with particularly pleasing colours is an excellent carpet that can be placed in the dining or living room with underlay. 17 ft 7 in x 10 ft

Description: Black Coins 26 x 18 in The British East India Company established initial settlement in 1612 at Surat,in Gujarat in the mid 17th century, the European style coinage did not gain popularity and thus the British sent their bullion to the contemporary Mughal Emperor for minting coins. The official currency since the 15th century in India was 'paisa'. Paisa is an Urdu term meaning money or cash, 'anna' was the currency unit in India . The term belonged to the Mughal monetary system. Soon after, the British superseded the Mughal reign in India , they decimalized the currency into 'rupaiya'. The paisa was named 'naya paisa' and 'nayarupaiya' henceforth, respectively. This artwork has a collection of the end of the 'anna' series and the old 'paisa' series during the British reign. The coins are of different alloys and denominations. An imaginative compilation by the artist shows an embedded document of this time adding to the display and value of this collage.
