L. Leroy & Cie. Born in 1859 in Argenteuil, the eldest son in a family of 14 children, he soon became familiar with the art of precision watchmaking. His father, Théodore-Marie Leroy, was well known as a maker of chronometers, Watchmaker to the Navy and a member of the Légion donneur. He employed Louis in the workshops where he quickly became the best of apprentices. When he was barely 16 years old he presented a piece that attracted great attention at the competition of the Paris Chamber of Watchmakers, and by the age of 20 he was an approved watchmaker. He spent a year in England, training under a manufacturer in Clerkenwell shortly after the London Universal Exhibition, and soon gained a reputation for being talented and ambitious with a fiercely enquiring mind. Casimir Halley Desfontaines recognized his ability and employed him at Le Roy & Sons, and soon afterwards in the Paris workshops. This was the dawn of a new era in society and the start of the company period of absolute excellence. Louis relationship with the Desfontaines family soon developed into a close friendship. When Casimir died, his son George took over the business, but his reliance on the expert advice of Leroy meant that it was he who emerged as the real leader. He became a partner in the business in 1888 and took it over completely one year later, changing the name to .Leroy & Cie, ancienne maison Le Roy & Fils From 1895 onwards, the company archives only refer to the name Leroy & Cie. If the girl had refused to follow him, Abraham stated that Eliezer would be absolved of his responsibility. Eliezer devised a test in order to find the right wife for Isaac. He stood at the central well in Abraham's birthplace with his men and ten camels laden with goods. To his surprise, a young girl immediately came out and offered to draw water for him to drink, as well as water to fill the troughs for all his camels. Rebecca continued to draw water until all the camels were sated, proving her kind and generous nature and her suitability for entering Abraham's household. While Europa and her female attendants were gathering flowers, she saw the bull, caressed his flanks, and eventually got onto his back. Zeus took that opportunity and ran to the sea and swam, with her on his back, to the island of Crete. He then revealed his true identity, and Europa became the first queen of Crete. Her body was discovered by Orpheus who, overcome with grief, played such sad and mournful songs that all the nymphs and gods wept. On their advice, Orpheus travelled to the underworld and by his music softened the hearts of Hades and Persephone, who agreed to allow Eurydice to return with him to earth on one condition: he should walk in front of her and not look back until they both had reached the upper world. He set off with Eurydice following, and, in his anxiety, as soon as he reached the upper world, he turned to look at her, forgetting that both needed to be in the upper world, and she vanished for the second time, but now forever. He first used his masters mark in 1783, when he became a master on December 22. He presumably formed the company Georges Rémond & Cie. seven years later; around 1800 the company was renamed Rémond, Mercier, Lamy & Cie. During the French occupation of Switzerland by Napoleon Rémond used his initials within a lozenge as his mark, which was in accordance with the stipulations of the newly formed Département du Léman. A similar design without the lozenge was used by the company Lamy, Rémond, Mercier, Daniel Berton from 1815 to 1829. In 1820 a new company Mercier, Blondel and Berton was established, so it is assumed that Rémond retired or died around that time. The new company only lasted for another seven years though and ceased to operate on April 14, 1827.

Description: A very fine, important and early solid gold enamel case with a later verge movement Case: outer case - leather-covered, gilt stud decoration. Inner case - 21k gold, scallop-shaped, six lobes, entirely chased, engraved and enamelled with floral motifs in opaque white, blue and black enamel, intertwined with translucent red, green, and dark blue, signed movement protection cap. Dial: enamel on gold, radial Roman hours on gold ring with half-hour dot divisions, the center and outermost predominately in champlevé opaque white enamel decorated en suite to the case, with flowers, blued "Poker & Beetle" hands. Movm.: full plate movement, brass, fiegilt, signed, cylindrical pillars, chain/fusee, verge escapement, three-arm brass balance, blued balance spring, cock pierced and engraved with scrolling foliage. During the 18th century movements were regularly replaced in watches which were exclusive because of their beauty or their expensiveness ' many examples in museums and private collections bear witness to the practice. John Leroux was a renowned maker well known for being a fine and innovative craftsman; the fact that it was Leroux who replaced the movement in this watch suggests that it must have been of particular value to its owner. Looking at Leroux' pieces that are held by the British Museum, it may even be assumed that he was the maker who invented draw in the lever escapement, a feature which made the lever escapement function reliably. The dial of the watch is finely chased with thin lines and flowers and reminds the viewer of cloisonné enamelling. The work of Leroux which has survived is of outstanding quality and like Emery and Grant he was one of the very few makers of his time in London, who thoroughly appreciated the lever escapement invented by Mudge in 1754 and constantly strove to improve on it. Although he had lived and worked in London since about 1744, Leroux was not accepted into the Clockmakers' Company until 1781.
