The nautical design elements were reflected in the name of the watch and its water resistance (120m), which was considerable at the time.

Description: A gentleman's very fine Calatrava center seconds wristwatch with Breguet numerals dial Case: 18k gold, push back, 18k gold buckle. Dial: silver, applied gold Breguet numerals, centre seconds, gold feuille hands. Movm.: bridge movement, rhodium-plated, "fausses côtes" decoration, 8 adj., 20 jewels, compensation balance, index spring fine adjusting device. According to Patek Philippe the watch comes from the second series of the famous 12 SC calibers. Both series have only 24 pieces each (Huber & Banbery, Patek Philippe Wristwatches, Geneva 1988, p. 144). Caliber 12SC derived from caliber 12-120 made in the house and was designed for a model with a stop feature (hack mechanism) for ultra precision setting. A series of well adjusted 12-120 movements were given to Victorin Piguet to fit them with a stop mechanism for hack watches. The first test watches were equipped with a chronograph-like pushbutton to enable the owner to stop the watch for precision setting. During the quality control it was discovered that the system had a mysterious fault the watches equipped with the new feature were losing time, about a second a day, sometimes more. All were rechecked in the workshop but no fault was found they were perfect timekeepers. Finally, the mystery was solced; occasionally, the wearer would rub the watch against a wall, furniture, or his body. If the rubbing was at the pushbutton, the watch would stop for a fraction of a second. Over the period of a day the error added up to a second or so. At the end, the company decided to abandon the project and was left with a series of highly adjusted high quality sweep second movements which, eventually, found their way into a regular sweep second watches. Consequently, in 1939 and 1940 some buyers of regular sweep second Pateks unknowingly ended up with high quality demi-chronograph movements. Back in 1980's in Patek Philippe New York branch one could still buy parts for the cases fitted with hack pushbutton. On two occasions, 12 SCs were fitted with a perpetual calendar mechanism making them, along with Ref. 2498, the rarest perpetual calendar models Patek Philippe ever produced. Watches with cal. 12 SC fitted with Breguet dials are particularily rare.

Description: A gentleman's very fine, extremely rare Geneva wristwatch with chronograph and 30 min. counter - sold on 04/08/1946 - with original box and Patek Philippe extract from the archives Case: 18k gold, push back, 18k gold buckle. Dial: silvered, applied gold indexes/Roman numerals, auxiliary seconds, 30 min. counter, tachy scale, gold baton hands. Movm.: bridge movement, rhodium-plated, "fausses côtes" decoration, 8 adj., 23 jewels, very finely ground bevelled chronograph steel parts, ratchet wheel, Glucydur screw balance, blued balance spring, index spring fine adjusting device. Ref. 130 Reference 130 was first produced in 1934. No doubt for the connoisseur this is one of the most desirable sport watches ever to come from the Patek Philippe firm - its perfect proportions and the large and clearly-readable dial encircled by a slender, concave bezel which gives the dial an even greater luminosity make this a much sought-after treasure. This piece's combination of stylistic elements probably makes it the most coveted version of the model: a wonderful champagne-coloured dial background with enamelled scales and Patek Philippe emblem; hour indexes and original baton gold hands - all are perfectly preserved. The overall condition of the watch and its beautiful style are truly extraordinary.

Description: Exceptionally rare, most likely unique, magnificent, convertible (cabriolet), painted in relief on enamel, triple-cased pendant watch with hand painted enamel dial. Accompanied by Extract from the Archives. Made most likely for an exposition, sold to Jaques & Marcus, New York on September 15, 1886 for Madame E.S. de C. Case: 18K rose gold, outer case - two-part, monogrammed on the back "E.S. de C." Middle Case - two-part, entirely enameled in relief with Amor and Psyche as children playing in the clouds. Inner case - two-part, polished with glazed back. Punched with makers mark. Dial: the center with painted on black enamel scene of a cherub chasing a butterfly, hand painted gold Roman hours, elaborate gold Louis XVI hands. Movm.: maillechort, "fausses côtes" decoration, signed, 18 jewels, wolfteeth winding wheels, counterpoised "Moustache" lever, cut-bimetallic compensation balance with gold temperature and mean-time adjustment screws, blued steel balance spring. M. Potocki, in October 1889, writing about the Paris Exposition of the same year devoted a few paragraphs to Patek Philippe who won the Grand Prix. He paid special attention to "a marvel in enamel and gold, in three cases, the middle one, as well as the dial, in enamel showing putti playing in the clouds, in three-dimensions like repousse but in enamel". There is little doubt that he was describing this or a twin-sister watch. The watch is spectacular, not only the back but also the dial are entirely hand painted including the numerals and the minute track. The hand strokes of the painter are visible in the minute markers, as well as in the finish of the numerals. The case is constructed in such a way that it can be either an open face showing the dial, or a hunting case showing the enamel. It is also one of only two known Patek Philippe watches having three cases. Patek Philippe began using enamel in their cases already in 1839, the first year of the production. The tradition continued to the modern days. In the 1970's and 1980's the enamel work by such artists as Suzanne Rohr or Luce Chappaz decorated few special Patek Philippe pocket watches. The highest degree of the perfection of Patek Philippe enamels falls in the 1880s with the three-dimensional enamel work of this watch being an apogee of the art. This period, a century later, inspired the company to launch a limited series of modern enamel watches such as the famous ref. 866. There is a mystery in the watch; three years after it was made, in 1889, the year of the Paris Exposition where Patek Philippe won the Grand Prix, William-Adolphe Bouguereau painted his immortal "L'Amour et Psyche", called also "The First Kiss". Looking at this watch it is hard to escape an impression that the enamel artist and Bouguereau had more in common that one might think. It is a magnificent piece, a small mysterious marvel, as described by Potocki. No wonder that Patek Philippe won the Grand Prix at the exposition.
