(*) Le Coultre & Cie., Le Sentier, Case No. 20394, 53 mm, 129 g, circa 1900

Lot 356: (*) Le Coultre & Cie., Le Sentier, Case No. 20394, 53 mm, 129 g, circa 1900

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A rare minute repeating hunting case pocket watch with 2 jacquemarts Case: 18k rose gold, polished, gold dome, slide for repeating mechanism. Dial: gilt, central enamel dial with Roman numerals, auxiliary seconds, screwed on polychrome enamel figures - Hermes with winged sandals, winged cap, and the herald's staff on the left and Chronos with scythe on the right - striking the bell, blued Breguet hands. Movm.: bridge movement, frosted, gilt, 2 hammers / 2 gongs, screwed gold chatons, gold screw compensation balance. The symbolism of the scene depicted in the caduceus of Hermes represents a whole philosophy and discipline of life. It teaches how to work with the two negative and positive currents which circulate in the universe while the Chronos reminds us that the time we have for it is limited. The automaton Jacks on the dial refer to the Medieval way of public time announcing which was by real people striking every hour on a bell situated at the top of the city tower. Later, life-size robots, called Jacquemarts or Jacks, amused public by striking bells in large public clocks, of which, probably the most famous is the one in Venice at Piaza San Marco and the oldest (1383) in the tower of Dijon with robot Jacquemart, his wife Jacqueline, son Jacquelinet, and a daughter Jacquelinette.

Lot 357: (*) Attributed to LeCoultre, Le Sentier, Case No. 12613, 54 mm, 132 g, circa 1890

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A very fine hunting case pocket watch with minute repeater and chronograph with jumping 30-minute counter Case: 18k rose gold, polished, à goutte, gold dome, pusher for chronograph at "12", slide for repeating mechanism. Dial: enamel, Arabic "Empire" numerals, auxiliary seconds, 30 min. counter, central 60 min. counter, spade hands. Movm.: bridge movement, base caliber 42, frosted, gilt, finely ground, bevelled chronograph steel parts, ratchet wheel, 2 hammers, 2 gongs, gold screw compensation balance, counterpoised lever. The watch is unusual in that it combines LeCoultre's patented repeating system (1895) with instantaneous minute register mechanism patented by Lugrin in 1896. LeCoultre had its own instantaneous minute register patent going back to 1892. The difference is is slim - LeCoultre's design instantaneously pulls the register wheel one tooth every minute while Lugrin's pushes. Apparently, LeCoultre's decided to experiment in this watch with a different system. Interestingly, 19 years after LeCoultre patent, in 1911, Robert Cart patented a mechanism for instantaneous register which became a norm in modern chronographs, a system which was a simplified version of the LeCoultre's design.

S. Smith & Son. A leading firm in London for high quality and complicated watches at the turn of the century, S. Smith & Son was founded in 1851 by the jeweller and watchmaker Samuel Smith. In addition to the wide range of watches and clocks for private customers, Smith's also built reliable chronometers which made the firm a supplier to the Admiralty. Under the management of Herbert S.A. Smith the firm developed into a large manufacturing company that had its own research laboratories; in the next generation Sir Alan Herbert Smith extended the company product range further and began with the production of automobile and aircraft instruments. Around this time a period of general decline for British horology began; even so, a few British watchmakers created magnificent, ultra-complicated watches, as if to prove to the world that they were still the best. Some of these watches were made in collaboration with the most renowned Swiss watch companies. Charles Frodsham, Edward John Dent, and Samuel Smith were the London watchmakers best known for this, as well as J. W. Player in Coventry. Even among all the British Grand Complication watches of the 20th century this watch stands out.

At the time the company was very well-established and offered a product range of pocket watches of all kind, complications, and pocket and marine chronometers; Benson used movements by Victor Kullberg, Mercer, and Usher & Cole amongst others. Clocks and church clocks were produced - the town hall of Portsmouth for example has one of Benson's clocks. Later Arthur H. and Alfred Benson took over the running of the company. Description: A remarkable minute repeating hunting case pocket watch with automaton "Corrida" - made for the Ibero South American market Case: 18k rosé gold with lavish engraving: front with oval cartouche with engraved suit of armour, back with oval cartouche with oak and mascaroon. Peripheral star decorations, signed gold dome. Slider for the repeater, glazed movement. Dial: enamel, enamel outer chapter ring with radial Roman numerals, central automaton with polychrome enamel figures: a bull nods its head at the hour, a picador stabs the bull with his lance at the quarter hour, auxiliary seconds, gold spade hands. Movm.: bridge movement, nickel-plated, stripe-decorated, 2 hammers, 2 gongs, 30  jewels, screwed chatons, wolfteeth winding wheels, screw compensation balance, blued balance spring. This piece is a wonderful example of the fine quality Swiss watches that were produced specially for the Hispanic market. With its elaborately engraved case showing a military trophy it is very likely to have been a special commission. As the watch is lavishly ornamented and has an extremely rare and unusual automaton scene of a picador fighting a bull in the centre, it can be assumed that it was created to the order of a nobleman.

Thousand-year moon phase mechanism What will first and foremost fascinate the clock enthusiast is the precision with which the Lange designers have crafted the mechanism of this moon phase indication - the engineers did not settle for the conventional moon phase calculation which assumes that the moon travels around the earth in approximately 29 days, but tried to adapt to the actual astronomical conditions; these are based on the exact time of the synodic month, which is 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 3 seconds. This means that the '1815 MONDPHASE' follows the same principle of calculation as the very large astronomical clocks do.
