It is also one of the earliest known De Saint Leu's watches. These watches established his reputation which, in 1765, let to choosing him as a Watchmaker to the Queen. Daniel de St. Leu Daniel de St. Leu originally came from Geneva and worked from 1753 to 1797; he created some of the most beautiful and intricate watches of the eighteenth century. In 1765 he was appointed watchmaker to Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III - the fact that all of de St. Leu's watches after this year are either signed 'Sevt. to her Majesty', or 'Watch Maker to her Majesty' is proof that he held this title for the rest of his life. De St. Leu was specialized in the production of watches for the wealthy Ottoman market, where the clientele wanted their watches to be pieces of jewellery, often in lavish gold cases with elaborate decoration and set with precious stones. In the 18th century, English watches were very much in demand on the Ottoman market and exported in great numbers from England. R. Rolt states in 'A New Dictionary of Trade and Commerce', 1756, that "Great quantities of watches are exported to Asia, particularly to Turkey; where they serve more for ornaments like pictures in rooms, than for use in pockets." Daniel de St. Leu created movements of superior quality and put them in extravagant cases - the perfect timepieces for the Ottoman market.

Description: An extremely rare pair-cased verge pocket watch with early auxiliary seconds indication Case: outer case - silver, polished, large lateral hinge. Inner case - silver, polished, case maker's punch mark "JS". Dial: enamel, radial Roman hours, auxiliary seconds, blued steel "Poker & Beetle" hands. Movm.: fine full plate movement, keywind, applied florally engraved and pierced ornaments, firegilt, signed, chain/fusee, tulip pillars, three-arm steel balance, blued balance spring, very finely florally engraved pierced balance cock. Thomas Tompion Without doubt Thomas Tompion (1637-1713) must be considered the most famous of all English clockmakers; in the 18th century he alone was responsible for the rise to supremacy of English clockmaking. He became a brother of the Clockmakers' Company in 1671 and moved 1674 to a workshop in Water Lane, from where he conducted his business for the rest of his life. In the very same year Tompion met Robert Hooke, when Hooke sought his help in proving that his invention of the balance spring was prior to that of Huygens'. This brought Tompion to the notice of King Charles II and his status was rapidly elevated. Tompion created the first clock for the Greenwich Observatory in 1676 and collaborated with Booth and Houghton in 1695 in patenting an escapement with a horizontal escape wheel, which was considered to be a forerunner of the cylinder. Buckingham Palace today holds two equation clocks which were probably supplied to William III in the 1690's. Some time between 1680 and 1685, Tompion started to number his production, apparently being the first maker to do this. He was elected Master of the Clockmakers' Company in 1703 and took George Graham into partnership around 1711; this partnership was to last until the end of Tompions life. Tompion No. 1303 This watch formed part of the Burton collection, see "The Watch Collection of Stanley H Burton Warts and All". A rare early Tompion, no. 1303 (the circled dot representing a thousand), with subsidiary seconds. Until the application of the balance spring watches were not accurate enough for the indication of seconds to be useful. There are less than a dozen examples of Tompion's watches with subsidiary seconds recorded. The dial plate is stamped "SC" for the movement finisher whose mark is found on many Tompion watches as well as some by Daniel Quare and James Markwick. The mark might be for Sampson Crooke. This quality of the movement was still appreciated enough 80 years after its manufacture to warrant it having a new dial and case made for it. See "Thomas Tompion at the Dial and Three Crowns" by Jeremy Evans who we thank for his help in providing information about this watch.

Description: An extremely rare Arnold chronometer "of the second kind" - with early and large "OZ" balance of John Arnold Case: 18k pink gold consular case, à goutte, case maker's punch mark "WW" (William West), large lateral hinge. Dial: enamel, radial Roman numerals, auxiliary seconds, gold Poker & Beetle hands. Movm.: full plate movement, firegilt, signed, numbered, chain/fusee, round pillars, Arnold's spring detent escapement, OZ balance, blued freesprung helical balance spring, very finely engraved pierced balance cock, chatoned diamond endstone on balance. John Arnold (1736-1799) After his apprenticeship with his father in Cornwall, John Arnold settled in London in 1760. In 1764 he presented King George III with a half quarter repeating cylinder watch mounted in a ring. By the time he was 28, Arnold's watches, be they verge or cylinder, displayed interesting original components such as straight-line compensation curbs and minute repeating by increments of 10 minutes (instead of the more common 15 minutes). Around 1768 Arnold began his research into marine chronometers. He established himself at 2 Adam Street, Adelphi Buildings, Strand, in 1771 and carried out most of his research into marine chronometers here over the next eleven years. By 1774 Arnold had constructed a marine chronometer with pivoted detents; he invented terminal curves for the cylindrical balance spring in 1776 and included this construction in the patent for a bimetallic compensated balance he took out in 1782. He subsequently devised numerous different balances such as the Double T, Double S, Z, O-Z and U. Arnold, who was admitted to the Clockmakers' Company in 1783, was the first to employ the term chronometer in the modern sense and to successfully find a way to simplify Harrison's timekeeper design. In 1787 he took his son, John Roger Arnold, into partnership and changed the business name to "Arnold & Son", which it retained until his death.
