Ulysse Nardin 8 day chronometer, caliber M.8.100 Pierre Béguin invented the 8 day chronometer around 1945 in Le Locle; the new type, which was to build on the advantages of the 2 day chronometer, was introduced with the intention of modernizing the range of the Nardin company. Its prototype was developed on May 7, 1943 and submitted to official tests from October 25 to December 27, 1943. The tests compared directly with those of the Neuchâtel observatory for the Bulletin de 1ère classe for marine chronometers and the required precision was achieved during the very first tests. About 80 copies of the caliber were produced between 1944 and 1963. Only a few of them were actually sold - not to a national navy but to geodetic institutes, a number of geographical boards and some scientific labs. The new product had been developed in a time of worldwide crisis, which made it extra difficult to judge the demand for a new caliber and make decisions on investments to be taken. With its large winding crown and the much sought-after "Explorer-Type" dial design, this is one of the rarest "Submariner" variations. Ref. 6538 - James Bond Reference 6538 was produced from 1955 until 1959. From 1957 on the dial of the watch bore the inscription "Officially Certified Chronometer", whereas the earlier models had not been chronometer certified by COSC. Sean Connery made his debut as James Bond in the 1962 film "Dr. No" and has worn the Rolex ref. 6538; for this reason the reference 6538 is considered to be the only true "James Bond" Submariner by many collectors. The 6538 is called "coroncione" by its Italian fans - "coroncione" meaning "large crown".

Lot 80: (*) Rolex "Oyster Perpetual Tru-Beat Superlative Chronometer officially certified", Case No. 394541, Ref. 6556, Cal. 1040, 35 mm, circa 1956

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A gentleman's very fine and very rare, stainless steel wristwatch with jump center seconds (beating true seconds) and a stainless steel Oyster riveted bracelet with deployant clasp in original Rolex box and with Rolex service paper Case: steel, polished and brushed, screwed back, "Twinlock" winding crown, folded steel "Oyster" bracelet ref. 7835. Dial: silvered, matted, applied hour steel indexes with luminous dots, sweep centre seconds beating one second at a time, steel dauphine hands. Movm.: rotorwind movement, rhodium-plated, 6 adj., 26 jewels, Glucydur screw balance, shock protection for balance. Rolex "Tru Beat" The "Tru Beat" or Jump Seconds model is considered to be one of the most esoteric Rolex models ever. The Tru Beat was featured in 1954 but the sales did not start until the following year. The majority was produced in two series of about 1000 pieces each; the first in 1955-56, the second (and the last) in 1960-61 when the company anounced that a new caliber, 1020, will replace the old one, presumably to make it easier for watchmakers to clean it. This has not materialized. The Tru Beat features a complicated mechanism that allows the sweep second hand to jump once every second. It employes a special caliber 1040 based on the reliable 1030 found in the chronometer grade Oyster Perpetuals. Because of the complexity of the mechanism many examples during cleanings by unfamiliar watchmakers were stripped of the jump mechanism making the existing Tru Beats very rare. This watch with its original box and Rolex service paper appears to be the most complete Tru Beat offered at auction within the past years.

Ref. 6202 The Rolex "Turn-O-Graph" was the first model of the so-called "professional" series. Characteristic of this piece is the revolving graduated bezel, where a triangle represents position zero. The watch has a chronograph function, however, it offers two advantages a regular chronograph does not have - a better resistance to wear, and a high impermeability due to the fact that it has no chronograph pushers. This watch was produced in the 1950's in stainless steel and in stainless steel and gold, in a few thousand examples only. Similar wristwatches are published in "Rolex, Collecting Wristwatches", by Osvaldo Patrizzi, Guido Mondani Editore, 2001, pp. 284, 286 and 382

Description: A gentleman's important and very fine wristwatch with chronograph. This is one of the rarest Rolex chronograph references. The watch comes in an excellently preserved precious steel version and has the most appealing charmingly vintage dial. Case: steel, screw back, "Rolex Oyster" winding crown, riveted steel "Oyster" bracelet. Dial: silvered, raised indexes/Arabic numerals, auxiliary seconds, 30 min. and 12h counter, black tachy scale, blue telemeter scale, gold leaf hands. Movm.: 2/3 plate movement, rhodium-plated, ground, 17 jewels, finely ground and bevelled chronograph steel parts, ratchet wheel, Glucydur screw balance, blued balance spring. Ref. 4537 Without doubt reference 4537 is one of the finest and unusual Rolex Oyster chronographs of all times. It is one of the first chronographs the company designed with three subsidiary dials and the new modern "tonneau" case. The reference was only produced for a very short period of time and replaced the rounder "Calatrava" model of reference 4048. It is becoming exceedingly rare to come across a reference 4537 in such fine and well-preserved condition like the watch we have here; it is outstanding in so many details - such as the original dial and the "Rolex Oyster" crown with the Swiss cross ' that it is a true find for any demanding collector of Rolex chronographs.
