Cormac McCarthy CHILD OF GOD 1974 First Edition In Scarce Dust Jacket

Lot 2004: Cormac McCarthy CHILD OF GOD 1974 First Edition In Scarce Dust Jacket

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Child of GodAuthor: Cormac McCarthy - Cormac McCarthy is an American novelist and playwright. He has written ten novels, spanning the Southern Gothic, Western, and modernist genres. He received the Pulitzer Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction for "The Road." His 2005 novel "No Country for Old Men" was adapted as a 2007 film of the same name, which won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. He received a National Book Award and National Book Critics Circle Award for his 1992 novel, "All the Pretty Horses." "All the Pretty Horses" and "The Road" were also made into major motion pictures."Blood Meridian" (1985) was among Time magazine's list of 100 best English-language books published between 1923 and 2005 and placed joint runner-up in a poll taken in 2006 by The New York Times of the best American fiction published in the last 25 years. Literary critic Harold Bloom named him as one of the four major American novelists of his time, alongside Don DeLillo, Thomas Pynchon and Philip Roth, and called "Blood Meridian" "the greatest single book since Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying"." In 2010 The Times ranked "The Road" first on its list of the 100 best fiction and non-fiction books of the past 10 years. He is frequently compared by modern reviewers to William Faulkner. McCarthy has been increasingly mentioned as a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.Publisher: Random HouseCity: New YorkYear: 1973Printing Information: First EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: 197 pagesWidth: 6" Height: 8.5"Book Details: Cormac McCarthy's third novel. Though the novel received critical praise, it was not a financial success. Like its predecessor, "Outer Dark," "Child of God" established McCarthy's interest in using extreme isolation, perversity, and violence to represent normal human experience. McCarthy ignores literary conventions - for example, he does not use quotation marks - and chops and changes among several styles of writing such as matter-of-fact descriptions, almost poetic prose, and colloquial first-person narration (with the speaker remaining unidentified).Set in mountainous Sevier County, Tennessee, Child of God tells the story of Lester Ballard, a dispossessed, violent man whom the narrator describes as "a child of God much like yourself perhaps." Ballard's life is a disastrous attempt to exist outside the social order. Successively deprived of parents and homes and with few other ties, Ballard descends literally and figuratively to the level of a cave dweller as he falls deeper into crime and degradation.Condition / Notes: This is a scarce stated first edition of this the third novel from the critically acclaimed and highly regarded author. Top edges of volume show faint discoloration, book is otherwise in excellent condition. Binding is tight. Interior is clean and fresh.Dust jacket featuring a full rear panel photo of a young McCarthy is well preserved, without any clipping or markings. For lots which include only books, our shipping charge applies to any address within the fifty United States. For lots which are not books, the stated shipping cost in this listing will apply only to addresses within the continental 48 states. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Memoirs of Margaret Fuller OssoliAuthor: Margaret Fuller Ossoli - Sarah Margaret Fuller Ossoli, commonly known as Margaret Fuller, was an American journalist, critic, and women's rights advocate associated with the American transcendentalism movement. She was the first full-time American female book reviewer in journalism. Her book "Woman in the Nineteenth Century" is considered the first major feminist work in the United States.Born Sarah Margaret Fuller in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she was given a substantial early education by her father, Timothy Fuller. She later had more formal schooling and became a teacher before, in 1839, she began overseeing what she called "conversations": discussions among women meant to compensate for their lack of access to higher education. She became the first editor of the transcendentalist journal The Dial in 1840, before joining the staff of the New York Tribune under Horace Greeley in 1844. By the time she was in her 30s, Fuller had earned a reputation as the best-read person in New England, male or female, and became the first woman allowed to use the library at Harvard College. Her seminal work, "Woman in the Nineteenth Century," was published in 1845. A year later, she was sent to Europe for the Tribune as its first female correspondent. She soon became involved with the revolution in Italy and allied herself with Giuseppe Mazzini. She had a relationship with Giovanni Ossoli, with whom she had a child. All three members of the family died in a shipwreck off Fire Island, New York, as they were traveling to the United States in 1850. Fuller's body was never recovered.Fuller was an advocate of women's rights and, in particular, women's education and the right to employment. She also encouraged many other reforms in society, including prison reform and the emancipation of slaves in the United States. Many other advocates for women's rights and feminism, including Susan B. Anthony, cite Fuller as a source of inspiration. Many of her contemporaries, however, were not supportive, including her former friend Harriet Martineau. She said that Fuller was a talker rather than an activist. Shortly after Fuller's death, her importance faded; the editors who prepared her letters to be published, believing her fame would be short-lived, were not concerned about accuracy and censored or altered much of her work before publication.Publisher: Phillips, Sampson and CompanyCity: BostonYear: 1852Printing Information: First EditionBinding Style: HardcoverNumber of Volumes: 2 Complete: YesWidth: 5.5" Height: 8"Book Details: These "memoirs" posthumously were published in February 1852 and edited by Ralph Waldo Emerson, James Freeman Clarke, and William Henry Channing, though much of the work was censored or reworded. Finance Minister Laverdy 18TH-CENTURY FRENCH LEGAL DOCUMENT Delimitation Of Property Gambois

Lot 2030: Finance Minister Laverdy 18TH-CENTURY FRENCH LEGAL DOCUMENT Delimitation Of Property Gambois

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Details: French-language legal document dated May 21st 1767 apparently relating to the delimitation of property belonging to Clement Charles Francois de Laverdy (or L'Averdy, 1723-1783), marquis de Gambais, finance minister (controleur general des finances) to Louis XV from 1763-1768. In 1765, L'Averdy acquired the chateau de Neuville in Gambais (today a commune in the Yvelines department in the Ile-de-France region in north central France). This string-bound document has the words "Proces Verbal de Reconnaissance" at the top margin of first page, written in large letters, immediately connecting to the body of the text which continues "des Limites de La (word partially obscured by stamp) de Gambais, apartenant a Monsieur DeLaverdy, Ministre d'Etat, Con. Gen. des finances, avec...(remaining words of paragraph are difficult to make out) . An official stamp bearing the words "Gen. de Paris Extraordinaire" appears over title. The date "21 Mai 1767" can be seen in upper left-hand corner. Underneath date are the words "quinzieme lotte trente une" followed by "15 lotte 31" and and a signature. The names of Nicolas Francois Ponchon, "avocat en Parlement," and of others appear of first page of text. Text itself is divided into 116 numbered sections. Most of these subdivisions begin with the formula "A (number) perches (number) pieds de distance de.."Document is made up of 20 leaves and 36 pages of handwritten text. Same stamp at top of first page appears at the top of the recto of every page. Lower left-hand corners show water stain; bottom edge shows minor chipping. Document measures approximately 8.75" x 13.25"Laverdy was a member of the parlement of Paris when the case against the Jesuits came before that body in August 1761. He demanded the suppression of the order and thus acquired popularity. King Louis XV named him Controller-General of Finances in December 1763, but the tasks at hand seemed to surpass Laverdy's financial abilities. Three months after his nomination, he forbade the publishing of any material concerning his administration, thus refusing both advice and criticism. Laverdy used all means, sometimes illicit ones, to replenish the treasury, and was even accused of having himself profited from the commerce in wheat. A court intrigue led to his sudden dismissal on 1 October 1768. From that moment on, he lived in retirement until, during the French Revolution, he was involved in the charges against the financiers of the Ancien Régime. The Revolutionary Tribunal sentenced him to death, and he was guillotined in 1793.Condition / Notes: For lots which include only books, our shipping charge applies to any address within the fifty United States. Dick Francis ODDS AGAINST 1991 Author-Signed Limited Edition English Mystery Novel

Lot 2036: Dick Francis ODDS AGAINST 1991 Author-Signed Limited Edition English Mystery Novel

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Odds AgainstAuthor: Dick Francis - Richard Stanley "Dick" Francis CBE was an English jockey and crime writer, many of whose novels center around horse racing.Francis wrote more than 40 international best-sellers. His first book was his autobiography "The Sport of Queens" (1957) which led to him becoming the racing correspondent for London's Sunday Express newspaper, remaining in the job for 16 years. In 1962 he published his first thriller "Dead Cert," set in the world of racing. Subsequently he regularly produced a novel a year for the next 38 years, missing only 1998 (during which he published a short-story collection). Although all his books were set against a background of horse racing, his male heroes held a variety of jobs including artist ("In the Frame and to the Hilt"), private investigator ("Odds Against," "Whip Hand," "Come to Grief," "Under Orders"-all starring injured ex-jockey Sid Halley, one of only two heroes used more than once), pilot, artist, wine merchant and many others. All the novels are narrated by the hero, who in the course of the story discovers himself to be more resourceful, brave, tricky, than he had thought, and usually finds a certain salvation for himself as well as bestowing it on others. Details of other people's occupations fascinated Francis, and the reader finds him-or herself immersed in the mechanics of such things as photography, accountancy, the gemstone trade, restaurant service on transcontinental trains-but always in the interests of the plot. Dysfunctional families were a subject which he exploited particularly well.Francis is the only three-time recipient of the Mystery Writers of America's Edgar Award for Best Novel, winning for Forfeit in 1970, Whip Hand in 1981, and Come To Grief in 1996. Britain's Crime Writers Association awarded him its Gold Dagger Award for fiction in 1979 and the Cartier Diamond Dagger lifetime achievement award in 1989. In 1996 he was given the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award, the highest honour bestowed by the MWA.
