Description: An outstanding flintlock gun from the property of Landgraf Ernst Ludwig von Hessen Darmstadt, dating: last quarter of the 17th Century provenance: Germany Smooth, four-stage, 18 mm cal. barrel, first octagonal then of sixteen faces and finally round with acanthus leaves at the girdles, with moulded muzzle, engraved with fine floral motifs at the edges, the entire length with dark, opaque, granulated ground, golden foresight; engraved tang; flintlock with pierced safety lock, signed "Moritz A Cassel" and engraved with effigy of a warrior, mask and floral motifs; full stock of Grenoble briarwood with outstanding iron mounts and silver inlays, iron counter-plate richly pierced and engraved with effigy of warriors, armoured wolf, king, bird among racemes, granulated and grooved trigger guard, butt-plate engraved with hares, dragon heads, snakes and floral motifs; chiselled, silver floral motifs around the butt-plate, the neck and under the barrel, a mask at the back, at the neck the specular, silver, crowned royal monogram "EL"; at the counter-plate a saddle hook with iron ring, chiselled with spiral. The iron tip of the ramrod decorated en suite with the barrel bracket. Ernst Ludwig was Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt from 1678 to 1739. The gunsmith at the court of Moriz is documented in Kassel at the end of the 17th Century, he also worked for the Duke of Braunschweig. To create the stocks of the gun, datable around 1685, he imported the famous briarwood of Grenoble. dimensions: length 96 cm.
