Duncan/ 1.11.1932/ Winning Rider/ 'Peter Pan'/ Melbourne/ Cup', the popper stamped 'Alex Morrison'; and colour print by 'Osboldstone & Co.' showing Peter Pan and the finish of the 1932 Melbourne Cup, some loss to borders (2) Whip 72cm long PROVENANCE The whip was give to Norm Cove by Bill Duncan. OTHER NOTES Peter Pan was a colt by the English horse Pantheon, from the mare Alwina. He was bred at Baroona estate near Singleton in NSW by owner Mr R.R. Dangar and trained by veteran Frank McGrath. Peter Pan's breakthrough came as a three year old. He won the Rosehill Hill Stakes and then the A.J.C. Derby against decent opposition including 1929 Melbourne Cup winner Nightmarch. However the colt finished a disappointing fourth in the Caulfield Cup and his rider was replaced by Billy Duncan, an exceptional jockey. This a change in form and Peter Pan won his next race, the Melbourne Stakes on Derby Day, defeating Caulfield Cup winner Rogilla. Peter Pan started the 1932 Melbourne Cup as favourite but his victory came in extraordinary circumstances. During the race he was bumped and fell to his knees. Dennis Boy, his stablemate, was running behind and bumped into him, causing Peter to regain his footing. Billy Duncan used all his skills to settle the colt and he went on to take Peter Pan to victory.
