With the Mounted Infantry and the Mashonaland Field Force, 1896, 1st ed., 1898, ten b & w plts. including two folding, correct as listed, publisher's cat. at rear, some spotting, author's presentation inscription to Major General Sir F. Carrington, dated 1898 and inscribed to front pastedown, hinges sl. cracked, orig. cloth gilt, sl. rubbed and marked with one small split at head of spine, together with Sykes (Frank W.), With Plumer in Matabeleland, An Account of the Operations of the Matabeleland Relief Force During the Rebellion of 1896, 1st ed., 1897, num. b & w plts. and illusts., mostly from photos, folding map and publisher's ads. at rear, some spotting, author's presentation copy to Frederick Carrington, inscribed to front endpaper and dated 1897, orig. cloth gilt, rubbed and soiled, spine browned and upper board sl. creased, plus Fitzpatrick (Sir Percy), Jock of the Bushveld, 1st ed., 1907, col. frontis., b & w plts. and text border illustrations, signed presentation inscription to Frederick Carrington from H.J. Elwes [1846-1922, botanist and author], dated Christmas 1907, orig. cloth gilt, sl. rubbed and a little frayed at spine ends, all 8vo, plus other turn-of-the-century African interest including two with Carrington ownership associations. Provenance: By descent from Sir Frederick Carrington (1844-1913). After education at Cheltenham College, Carrington entered the 24th Foot (South Wales Borderers) in 1864. In 1895 he fought in Africa on several occasions and for his important part in quelling the Matabele uprising in 1896 he was created KCB. In 1897 he married Susan Margaret, only daughter of Henry John Elwes of Colesborne, Cheltenham. See also lots 48-51. (8)
