Description: Ainslie (Kathleen). Votes for Catharine Susan and Me, Castell, [1910], chromo. illusts. throughout, neat ms. name to head of title-page, scattered light foxing, orig. col. pictorial sewn wrappers, extrems. sl. rubbed, lightly foxed and a few faint stains, sm. 4to, together with Catharine Susan in Hot Water, Castell, [1910], chromo. illusts. throughout, neat ms. name to head of title-page, occn. foxing, orig. col. pictorial sewn wrappers, foxed, and extrems. rubbed, small hole in upper cover, sm. 4to Both rare titles in Kathleen Ainslie's series of little books. The first title is particularly interesting, coming some eight years before women were granted the vote. The suffragette movement in the United Kingdom was particularly militant, with some of its members committing vandalism and assault: churches were firebombed, windows were smashed, MPs were terrorised, and an axe was even thrown at Prime Minister Asquith. Numerous activists were imprisoned and then force-fed when they went on hunger strikes. Ains ie captures the mood of the time, in humorous fashion, with the two Dutch dolls joining the suffrage movement, fighting policemen at Westminster with pots and pans and smashing windows, taking to the skies in a Heath Robinson contraption, falling out onto the Prime Minister's car, being imprisoned and made to eat chocolates, and finally being released. Four years after Ainslie's book was published the First World War brought a halt to the public campaign, and at the end of the war women were granted the vote. (2)

Description: Bannerman (Helen). The Story of Little Black Sambo, 1st ed., 1899, twenty-seven single-page col. illusts., a few minor fox spots and some negligible finger-soiling, endpapers lightly foxed, neat contemp. ms. name to front pastedown, orig. green striped cloth, lightly rubbed, but a nice copy, 129 x 78 mms Helen Bannerman (1863-1946), married an army doctor and spent much of her life in India. In 1899, when she was returning there after leaving her two small daughters to be educated in her native Scotland, she wrote and illustrated this story of the adventures of a little black boy who outwits several tigers. 'Little Black Sambo' achieved a popularity not matched by Bannerman's later work. Critics praised the book as entertaining and humorous, and at first it was seen as a book that positively portrayed black characters, especially in comparison to other books of the time. But as the years passed, Bannerman's book came to attract harsh criticism and heated debate. There were successful calls to remove the bo k from library shelves. At the end of her life Helen Bannerman knew that her work was seen by some as racist and found this hard to understand; the child is the hero of the story and in her pictures he and his parents are lovingly drawn. Some thought that the names of Sambo's parents, Mumbo and Jumbo, made them objects of ridicule. Yet these are just an echo of affectionate names for parents and grandparents in Helen's own childhood. As her son Robert put it in a letter to The Times on 1 May 1972 when the book was under attack: 'My mother would not have published the book had she dreamt for a moment that even one small boy would have been made unhappy thereby'.
