Description: Australian Convict Ship. Norwoodiana or Sayings and Doings en route to Western Australia, manuscript journal, 1867, a bound volume of all eleven editions, the first for week ending 27th April 1867, the last for week ending 6th July 1867, decorative pen and ink heading to each number, written in a uniform neat hand throughout, possibly that of the editor J. Morris, largely in double columns, each issue being between 8 and 16 pages, four pen and ink sketches including one of the convict establishment, Fremantle, and one with watercolour of Swan River, regular columns include notes by the way, notices, gazette, domestic intelligence, weekly record, letters to the editor, distance and the position for the week, one birth and one death, also articles on acquaintance -v- friendship, working men's association, manliness, self respect, resurgamus, plus ongoing essays on Western Australia covering its history, prospects, resources, convict system, etc., 'Home', adventures in India by an old soldier, plus one piece of Fenianism, summary of a lecture on Western Australia by Mr. [William] Irwin [the religious instructor on board], horticulture in Australia: the fig, periods of probation and mark system - Western Australia, convict ships, a poem titled 'Western Australia' signed 'Convictus' and a convict's autobiography titled 'William Westwood, Alias Jacky-Jacky' (pp. 114-118 & 127-130), marginal split to first leaf of pp. 47/48, tear with loss to upper corner of pp. 79/80 touching first three lines of both pages, significant loss to following leaf with loss to first seventeen lines of marginal columns, lacking penultimate leaf of issue 10 (pp. 121-122), and possibly three leaves of final issue (pp. 133-138), ends p. 140 'Finis', a little spotting and sl. marginal fraying to final leaves, contemp. limp calf (with small ticket of Morley, Bookbinder, Forest Hill, SE, to front pastedown), gilt titled 'Norwoodiana' to upper cover, rubbed, joints split and some loss to head and foot of spine, slim folio The Norwood was a 786-tonne ship built in Sunderland in 1854 that was employed twice as a convict transport for Western Australia. This was its second trip, the Captain being Frank Bristow. The voyage took 86 days and the Norwood arrived in Fremantle on 13 July 1867 with 81 passengers and 253 convicts. Provenance : By descent from the family of John Henry Luscombe (1797-1883), ship owner of the Norwood. Luscombe married Clara Bristow (sister of the ship's Captain on this voyage) and one son, Sir John Luscombe (1848-1937) became an England Rugby Union International, and later Chairman of Lloyds of London. The Battye Library of Western Australia has an original edition of No. 6 and claims incorrectly that the Mitchell Library in Sydney holds the only complete set of the original journals. (1)
