Lot 4: Arts & Crafts School. A religious frieze depicting

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Arts & Crafts School. A religious frieze depicting the parable of the ten virgins, c.1890s, watercolour and gouache with gold, mounted on board, showing Christ in the centre, with two cherubs carrying Madonna lilies, within an architectual frame, with the five foolish virgins on the left, carrying unlit lamps and being shunned by an angel, and the five wise virgins on the right, carrying brightly lit lamps and being ushered into the presence of Christ, the architrave above Christ is lettered in gold: 'Enter Into His Gates with Thanksgiving, Psalm C v IIII' and the plinth bears the words 'God is Love', 334 x 782 mm (13 x 30.75 ins) Possibly a design for a mural or larger decorative panel, perhaps by an artist employed by a firm working in the traditions of Morris & Co. and Crace & Son. Burne-Jones and Millais had both produced paintings on the subject of the ten virgins, and here Pre-Raphaelite influences are strong, in the naturalist Madonna lilies, the faces of the figures, and the ar hitectural detail, whilst the arrangement of the composition and the drapery of the clothes are reminiscent of the work of Albert Moore.
