Condition Report: Areas of this painting have both selective retouch as well as restoration. Areas of the painting have vertical surface cracks, unstable paint cupping, craquelure, varnish inconsistencies and some missing paint chips. Much of the outer edges of the painting are restored. On balance, the figures are characterized by having more selective retouch than wholesale restoration. ATTRIBUTED TO FRANCESCO DI SIMONE DA SANTACROCE, (ITALIAN 1440-1508), THE MADONNA AND CHILD WITH THE INFANT SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ATTRIBUTED TO FRANCESCO DI SIMONE DA SANTACROCE (italian 1440-1508)/span THE MADONNA AND CHILD WITH THE INFANT SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST Oil on cradled panel 14 1/4 x 12 in. (36.2 x 30.5cm) provenance: /spanHattie Klapp Brunner, Reinholds, Pennsylvania. The Estate of Palmer Brown. note:/span For a related example, please see 'Madonna and Child with Saint John,' Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts, which was originally attributed to Francesco Rizzo da Santocroce, but later assigned to Francesco di Simone da Santocroce.

Condition Report: This painting is somewhat difficult to accurately decipher under u.v. light. There are two vertical cracks the length of the panel which are the center. There is a third crack about halfway down between those two cracks and some smaller vertical cracks at lower center. There is somewhat crude restoration associated with some of these cracked areas, including to parts of Virgin's face and Christ Child's body. The dark, almost visually grainy appearance and muddied areas may well be at least partially indicative of old restoration. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. MANNER OF GIOVANNI DI PAOLO, (ITALIAN ACTIVE CIRCA 1420-1482), A TRIPTYCH: THE CENTRAL PANEL, VIRGIN AND CHILD WITH GOD THE FATHER ABOV

Lot 118: MANNER OF GIOVANNI DI PAOLO, (ITALIAN ACTIVE CIRCA 1420-1482), A TRIPTYCH: THE CENTRAL PANEL, VIRGIN AND CHILD WITH GOD THE FATHER ABOV

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: MANNER OF GIOVANNI DI PAOLO (italian active circa 1420-1482)/span A TRIPTYCH: THE CENTRAL PANEL, VIRGIN AND CHILD WITH GOD THE FATHER ABOVE, CENTERED BY THE VIRGIN ANNUNCIATE; THE LEFT PANEL, SAINT PETER; THE RIGHT PANEL, SAINT PAUL Tempera on panel with gold ground 25 1/4 x 14 in. (64.1 x 35.6cm) (center panel) 27 7/8 x 8 1/8 in. (70.8 x 20.6cm) (left panel) 27 7/8 x 7 5/8 in. (70.8 x 19.4cm) (right panel) 27 7/8 x 32 13/16 in. (70.8 x 83.3cm) (overall, including space created between panels with later hardware) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: All three panels have some craquelure – with associated surface instabilities - along with mechanical damage, including abrasions and scratches. Each panel also has missing chips, some large, as seen in the catalogue photo. Under u.v. light, much of the ground in each panel appears somewhat dark. We believe this hue is a result of the pigment used, and not restoration. Many of the areas throughout the triptych that have missing chips of paint appear dark in those chip areas under u.v. light. We believe that these chips are largely not filled in, although they appear dark under u.v. light. Most of the missing chips of paint are in the top portion of the middle panel. Center panel: some of the areas with craquelure and surface instabilities/missing paint chips have associated restoration at right part of throne arm and top of throne at right area. There is also restoration at upper left beneath the image of God and some retouch to areas of the Virgin. The center panel is backed with a thicker wood panel that is comprised of joined sections. Side panels: some scattered retouch and paint losses. The outer frame also has missing paint chips, losses, mechanical damage – various surface imperfections. Lot 119: MANNER OF MATTEO DI GIOVANNI DI BARTOLO, CALLED 'MATTEO DA SIENA', (ITALIAN 1430-1495), A TRIPTYCH: THE CENTRAL PANEL, VIRGIN AND CHI

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: MANNER OF MATTEO DI GIOVANNI DI BARTOLO, CALLED 'MATTEO DA SIENA' (italian 1430-1495)/span A TRIPTYCH: THE CENTRAL PANEL, VIRGIN AND CHILD WITH SAINTS; THE LEFT PANEL, POSSIBLY THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL; THE RIGHT PANEL, AN APOSTLE Tempera on panel with gold ground 19 3/4 x 13 7/8 in. (50.2 x 35.2cm) (center panel) 20 x 6 7/8 in. (50.8 x 17.5cm) (left panel) 19 3/4 x 6 3/4 in. (50.2 x 17.1cm) (right panel) 20 x 27 5/8 in. (50.8 x 70.2cm) (overall) provenance: /spanCollection of Irving Francis Impink, one of the original founders of the Reading Museum. Thence by descent in the family. Private Collection, Lancaster, PA. note:/span A variation by Di Giovanni is in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Sienna.

Condition Report: Most of this triptych appears in original, unrestored condition. The majority of the Virgin, Christ Child and two flanking saints are largely in unrestored, original condition. This triptych does however have areas of restoration, although with at least one of the pigments employed (a dark brown), it is difficult to ascertain with certainty whether these brown pigments – seen in parts of virgin and the 'floor' upon which each saint stands in the outer panels. The Virgin's headdress is clearly largely repainted – on the left, the restoration extends down to the edge of the Christ child's halo; on the right, the restoration extends down to just above the Virgin's shoulder. The aforementioned brown pigment is used to highlight the outer trim to top of bodice and out trim to sleeves of Virgin's bodice, along with the area within the Virgin's right sleeve. In the center panel, at lower right, the visible surface disruption appears possibly due to varnish inconsistencies, and there is restoration in this area. The bottom outer edge (the raised area) of center panel is restored. The three panels are backed to thicker wood panels, each with some amount of mechanical damage: i.e. losses, imperfections, nicks and some localized crazing. In the center panel, on the reverse, there is a vertical crack that runs through the length of the panel, approx. 4 1/2 inches away from outer left edge in center panel. This crack does not appear to extend to the front of the painted panel. Condition Report: This painting has been glue/paste lined to a linen support. The paint layer appears quite flat, probably due to the lining. The painting exhibits moderate to extensive, medium width drying cracks throughout. Mechanical/ age cracks are most prominent in the flesh tones. Examination in ultraviolet light indicates the presence of a synthetic resin over a discolored natural resin varnish. Two generations of retouching are visible in UV. One is quite broad and is confined largely to the shadows and darker areas. The earlier retouching is more careful and confined largely to the cracks in the flesh. Description: CIRCLE OF WILLEM VAN MIERIS (dutch 1662-1747)/span THE SEWING LESSON Oil on panel 12 15/16 x 10 11/16 in. (32.9 x 27.1cm) provenance: /spanAn Estate, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: General minor abrasions/mechanical damage to top end. There is some streaky uneven/residual varnish (including some yellowed varnish to part of woman's dress). Under u.v. light, part of the painting is somewhat difficult to accurately decipher: there are very thin short, dark vertical lines in the approx. lower 1/2 of the painting. These lines appear to follow thin crazing lines/surface imperfections in the panel. We believe they may represent very thin, precise lines of retouch, though they may also be dark under u.v. as a result of surface accretions.
