GERALD SUMMERS (1899-1967) Armchair, seven layers

Lot 5: GERALD SUMMERS (1899-1967) Armchair, seven layers

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: GERALD SUMMERS (1899-1967) Armchair, seven layers of plywood moulded in a single sheet, designed 1933-1934, produced circa 1933-1940, registration no. 791116, stamped twice with registration number and also stamped '37', manufactured by Makers of Simple Furniture Ltd. of London, 29" high, 23 3/4" across Note: An example of the same model in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London also bears the Reg. No 791117 on a stamped metal tablet. The Makers of Simple Furniture Company founded in 1929 produced only 120 models of this chair (largely due to the high production costs). It was inspired by Alvar Aalto's plywood chairs, and looked to achieve an integration of design and manufacture. This work, originally produced in 1933-4 exploits the wood's flexibility, manipulating one piece of wood into a singular piece of furniture. Consequently the design is now considered a masterpiece of mid 20th Century modernist furniture.
