After the 1562 portrait of the 25 year old Duke at Arundel Castle. Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk (third creation), KG, Earl Marshal (1536-1572) was the son of the poet Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, and was a second cousin of Queen Elizabeth I through her maternal grandmother, Lady Elizabeth Howard. Following his release for plotting to marry Mary, Queen of Scots, he participated in the Ridolfi plot with King Philip II of Spain to put Mary on the English throne and restore Catholicism in England, though the strength of the evidence for his participation in the Ridolfi plot is doubted by some. He was executed for treason in 1572. He is buried at St Peter ad Vincula within the walls of the Tower of London. Norfolk's lands and titles were forfeit, although much of the estate was later restored to his sons. The title of Duke of Norfolk was restored, four generations later, to Thomas Howard.. Description: A mid 19th century chrome chalcedony and gold pendant, the ancient chrome chalcedony carved to depict the dextral profile of Zeus, rub over set in a mid 19th century gold pendant mount with a laurel wreath border, 3.2cm long. Chrome chalcedony was mined in the Anatolia province, now in central modern day Turkey, although it was thought in ancient times that these stones came from India, as recorded by Pliny. The gem was widely used in jewellery and seals throughout the Roman Empire, but it seems to have stopped being used during the 2nd century AD. Chrome chalcedony has not been mined since the ancient period, until deposits were found in Zimbabwe in the second half of the 20th century. Chrome chalcedony is coloured by chromium impurities, which are the same impurities that give the green colour to emeralds, unlike other green chalcedonies such as chrysoprase, which are coloured by iron and other chemical impurities.
