Description: Extremely Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Chicken Waterer with Large Cobalt Floral Design, attributed to R.J. Grier, Chester County, PA, circa 1875, beehive-form with acorn-shaped finial and applied semi-circular watering trough at base. Front and back decorated with a large brushed cobalt flower extending from a heavily-leafed stem. Brushed cobalt highlights at the sides of the watering trough. A highly unusual form for this maker. Chip to bottom edge of trough. 4 1/4" tall inverted Y-shaped crack at base on reverse, with one section of crack extending onto underside. Small, shallow chip to finial on reverse. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from New Jersey. H 11 3/4".

Hyssong, Cassville, PA, third quarter 19th century, ovoid-bodied pitcher with rounded foot and tall collar with tooled rim molding. Body of pitcher decorated completely around with a wavy vine bearing ten tulips. Collar decorated with cobalt swags, and spout decorated with vertical swags flanking a wavy cobalt stripe. Additional cobalt stripe at base of collar. Handle decorated with cobalt stripes. Pitcher is impressed "2," although it appears to be closer to a three-gallon. One of the most elaborately-decorated Huntington County, PA pitchers we have seen. Two spout chips. Chip to side of rim. 1 1/2" section of handle reglued. Crack extending 5 1/4" up front of pitcher and across underside. Additional cracks to base area on reverse, with one extending towards base of handle. H 14".

Description: Historically Significant Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Eagle Holding a Banner Inscribed "Gold $1.44.1/2/" Stamped "WM. A. MacQuoid & CO / NEW-YORK / LITTLE WST 12TH ST," circa 1869, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large brushed cobalt decoration of a detailed, spread-winged eagle holding a wavy banner, inscribed "Gold $1.44.1/2". This unique crock likely references the Black Friday Scandal of 1869, in which two wealthy businessmen, Jim Fiske and Jay Gould, attempted to corner the gold market by convincing President Grant to withdraw the U.S. government from the gold market. Between September 2 and September 24, 1869, the price of gold spiked from $34/ounce to $144/ounce. Excellent figural decoration with an interesting historical reference. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from the Mid-Atlantic. 4 1/2" hairline from rim on reverse. Small rim chips.

Description: Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Fine Slip-Trailed Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BURGER / ROCHESTER," circa 1860, gracefully-potted pitcher with ovoid body, tooled midsection, and tall flaring collar with rounded molding. Front decorated with an artistically-rendered slip-trailed design of a flowering plant with alternating solid and hollow petals, extending from a group of leaves. Cobalt highlight over maker's mark. Excellent color. 5 1/2" faint Y-shaped line on one side. 6" vertical hairline on right side of pitcher's front, a portion of which is visible on interior. Pitcher rings fine. H 11 3/8".
