Description: Very Rare Morgantown, WV Stoneware Commemorative Water Cooler with Elaborate Flowering Vine Decoration, attributed to the Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and spout, ribbed open handles, and circular bung hole at base, decorated on the front with two rows of flowering vines separated by cobalt brushwork. Reverse decorated with the cobalt inscription "Bael(?) Simpson / July 12th, 1809 / Morgantown Wst. Va. / Nov. 11th [??]." Handles decorated with cobalt flower blossoms, and bung hole with light cobalt highlight. We have yet to determine the significance of the inscription on the reverse. However, July 12th 1809 was the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, and may have significance to this cooler. A rare form for Morgantown stoneware, featuring a highly unusual inscribed reverse side. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased approximately thirty years ago. Lightness to inscription on reverse, making some of it difficult to read or illegible. Chip to one handle. Spout chip on reverse. 1 1/2" hairline to spout on reverse. Small stone ping to body on reverse. H 18 1/2".

Description: Important Stoneware Harvest Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Signed in Cobalt "KELLY & HARR / Perryopolis / Fayette Co. / Penna," circa 1855, beehive form with applied pouring spout, the body heavily-decorated with three different flower extending from a leafy vine. Additional cobalt stripe at base, cobalt highlights to spout and handle terminals, and tulip blossom brushed under one handle. Reverse inscribed in cobalt slip "KELLEY & HARR / Perryopolis / Fayette Co. / Penna". Exceptional form and decoration, featuring an exceedingly rare signature. Only the second signed example we have seen from this extremely rare potting firm (the other being a crock with a stamped maker's mark). Restored handle. Some tight lines to surface, possibly in-the-firing. A small spout chip. H 9 1/2".

Description: Exceptional Large-Sized Stoneware Water Cooler with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Ohio origin, probably Mogadore, mid 19th century, approximately ten-gallon, baluster-form cooler with squared rim, the front decorated with a bold and extravagant flowering tulip plant extending from the bung hole. Decoration includes tulip blossoms, which are several inches long, and dotted leaves. Additional flowering plant design on side of cooler. Excellent size and form, with some of the largest and finest freehand brushwork we have seen on a piece of Ohio stoneware. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found in Pennsylvania. Circular molding around bung hole missing, possibly during the firing. 6" Y-shaped surface line on side of cooler, not visible on interior. 5 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangular in-the-firing contact mark on right side of cooler with some residual pieces of clay. Tight Y-shaped line on underside, continuing 2 1/2" up base. Abrasion to side of jug, possibly in the firing. H 19 1/2".

Cobalt highlights to stag's head and base, as well as to the incised inscription "New Ulm Jager Club". Handle with cobalt stripe decoration. Exceptional form and highly unusual applied decoration.
