Description: Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Slender Body Form and Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1850, nicely-potted, large-sized pitcher with narrow body featuring a rounded shoulder and short collar, both accented with pairs of incised lines, the collar and body separated by a thick angular molding. Body of pitcher decorated completely around with twelve tulips extending from a leafy stem. Collar heavily-decorated with brushed cobalt swags and hanging flowers. Spout decorated with vertical cobalt swags. Impressed below spout with B.C. Milburn maker's mark, underscored by an impressed number "2". One of the finest examples of Milburn stoneware to surface in recent years, and a particularly rare form for this desirable Virginia maker. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from New Jersey. Overall excellent condition with some shallow chipping to base and in-the-firing crazing at bottom edge. H 13 1/4".

SMITH & CO," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1825, cylindrical jar with tooled and rounded shoulder and thick rounded rim, decorated with a brushed cobalt floral design including a stylized circular blossom surrounding the maker's mark with foliate trails extending from it to the left and right. Incised on the underside with the letter "M," possibly for potter, Benedict C. Milburn. A more unusual jar form for H. Smith & Co stoneware, featuring excellent, classic Alexandria decoration. A few base chips. Cracks at base, forming a tight spidering crack on underside.

Description: Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.," circa 1830, thin-walled ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied tab handles. Front decorated with a large flowering plant featuring unusual oval-shaped blossoms and very rare curved leaves with pointed ends. Reverse decorated with brushed cobalt drapes underscored by leaves. A well-decorated and early example of H.C. Smith stoneware, likely made shortly after the "H. SMITH & CO" stamp was discontinued. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in Northern Virginia. Hairlines around base, with one hairline extending 4" up from base. Losses to one handle. Minor chipping to base. In-the-firing piece of clay adhered to right side of jar's front.

Description: Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Bird, Grapes, and Floral Decorations, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1815-1820, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and open loop handles, decorated on the front with a slip-trailed design of three long-tailed birds perched on a grape vine. Reverse decoration with two crested birds with long tails, perched atop of flowering vine with brushed tulips and leaves. Wide cobalt stripe around rim. Additional cobalt highlighting the handle terminals, and cobalt stripes running under each handle. Vibrant color and exceptional folk art design. One of the earliest examples of figural decoration on Baltimore stoneware known, the others being a group of incised bird designs made about the same time by Henry Remmey and possibly his son, as well as one example by the firm of Morgan & Amoss. This jar exhibits a clear Remmey influence. The birds on this jar, particularly on the reverse, are in the manner of Henry Remmey, Sr., although the flowers on the reverse are not. An important new discovery in Baltimore stoneware. Provenance: Purchased years ago in Brimfield, MA. One handle restored. Restored rim chip. Minor, glazed-over base chip.
