Leslie Ragan was born in Iowa, and although he was largely a self-taught artist, he did study briefly at both the Cumming School of Art in Des Moines and the Art Institute in Chicago. He designed posters for the United States during the Second World War, but his largest account was with the New York Central Lines. "His work exemplified the American taste for realistic depiction while highlighting the natural environment for dramatic effect . . . Ragan's sense of composition and refined wash technique made his best images burst with reflected light" (Zega p. 95). The New York Central Line commissioned a different image every year to adorn their calendars. Here he depicts the La Salle Street station in Chicago and the impressive fleet of engines run by the railroad, including the iconic 20th Century Limited. This image often appears with the calendar cut off.

This image has been featured by the United States Postal Service on a series of stamps commemorating the 1930s and is among the top American Art Deco posters ever designed. According to the hyperbolic commentary written in a booklet released by the railroad for the occasion, this train, "which is truly magnificent [is] as completely comfortable as modern science can make it." The brochure adds a few facts about the train, such as it is composed of "16 cars . . . made up of a mail baggage car, a combination tavern-lounge-baggage car, three parlor cars, a diner, four coaches, a second diner, four additional coaches and an observation buffet. All cars are 85 feet in length, making an overall train length of 1360 feet--over a quarter mile." The railroad also used this poster image for the cover of a brochure. Zega fig. 154.

Elmes, who is best known for his Mather Work Incentive posters, also designed about a half-dozen images for the Chicago Rapid Transit and the North Shore Line in the 1920s. These images were originally painted, and then transferred onto separate lithographic stones for each color in the printing plants. "The lithographer's objective was to faithfully reproduce everything from color to texture and then register all the separate color levels during the printing process to replicate the original design. The final image was also enlarged to the standard 27"x41" (one sheet) poster size for exterior display on the train platforms, etc." (http://imprint.printmag.com/branding/%E2%80%9Ca-true-visionary-gives-chicago-a-landmark-branding-campaign-circa-1920-30%E2%80%9D/). A student at Chicago's Art Institute, Academy of Fine Arts and the Campbell Academy of Fine Arts, Huelster was a painter who went on to design posters for the South Shore Railway. While very little is known about the group of talented artists working on posters for the railway in Chicago at this time, we do know that "all were chosen for their talent and artistic sensibility. Their posters are not about trains . . . but rather they explore the changing textures and colors of the Region, enticing curious visitors from Chicago to vacation and to investigate" (Duneland p. 3). Even though more than 160 posters were designed for the rail companies in Chicago between 1921 and 1929, they are extremely scarce and seldom come on the market. Duneland p. 119.
