Description: LOWRY L. S.: (1887-1976) English Artist. A good A.L.S., L.S. Lowry, two pages, 8vo, Pendlebury, near Manchester, 2nd July 1944, to Mr. Rydings. Lowry states that he was pleased to receive his correspondent's letter and remarks 'I am going to find some photos (I have none at hand just at the moment) & will send them to you with pleasure', continuing 'I am very glad you are in comfortable quarters now....Well, so you are in a very bonny place now aren't you. Winchester is a place I have never been to, but my father knew it well & spoke very enthusiastically about the cathedral. I am not strong on cathedrals or ruins - perhaps it is because I am such a ruin myself. Pendlebury is a terrible place. No wonder I am a bit of a ruin living in Pendlebury.' The artist further states 'You accuse me of being a Realist. I think I must be. It seems to me it is a good thing there aren't too many Realists, if they feel like me. You are getting into some nice places. Scotland, I was looking at a card you sent me from Montrose sometime ago & now the bonny South. You lucky fellow. Are you doing a lot of thinking - It's a bad thing to do too much thinking. Look at me! So I warn you against doing too much thinking.' In concluding Lowry writes 'Now look here. I shall be sending you some photos before this week is out. All my work is depressing - so they will be all alike. I don't think any of them will excite the mirth of your good landlady.' Some light age wear and two small red ink stains to the second page, only very slightly affecting a couple of words of text. About VG

The artist apologises to his correspondent for not having been able to attend a party and continues 'I was this morn hobbling along the sand & digging up tiny spider starfish with my other stick [illustrating the letter at this point with three starfish of varying sizes] when I thought of your old reoccuring [sic] observation on the innocence of some adults in particular Paul McCartney, & I hope, ME, for when ALL the child is gone, & "maturity" is 100%, optimism, hope, expectancy & wonderment are gone & the being is moribund. I expect Picasso was part child till 90.' further remarking 'If when your eyelids open to the dawn there is no child behind them then its as good as ALL OVER & one might as well go to the mortician & order one's coffin. I would guess there is an instinct in one like Paul to jealously guard that part within that is child, for its in that area of his being that genius lies, & inspiration. To me 14 years ago he said he'd be Peter Pan: well he's failed in that but not completely.'
