RARE SHAKER MANUSCRIPT PROCLAMATION ON THE TREATMENT OF ANIMALS.

Lot 396: RARE SHAKER MANUSCRIPT PROCLAMATION ON THE TREATMENT OF ANIMALS.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: RARE SHAKER MANUSCRIPT PROCLAMATION ON THE TREATMENT OF ANIMALS. Ink on laid paper, 4 pp. ADS, David Meacham, probably New Lebanon, New York, undated, ca.1800. 12 1/2"h. 7 3/4"w. Descended in a Middletown, Connecticut, family. David Meacham, Sr. (1743-1826) was from an old Enfield, Connecticut family, a younger son of Joseph Meacham, Sr. (1708-1794) and the younger brother of Shaker leader Joseph Meacham, Jr. (1742-1796). When the Shaker way was introduced to Enfield, David Meacham and his family all converted and their homestead became the center of the Church Family. The Meacham family then moved to the New Lebanon community, where David was made the first deacon in 1794. In this remarkable and strongly worded proclamation, Meacham laments "the brutal creation or animal that has been groaning under great oppression and bondage." He continues by outlining, in specific terms, the proper care of livestock, including oxen, cows, and sheep, regularly stating that these animals, which are blessings given to mankind for "food...clothing...health and comfort" ought to be "kept in good flesh." He closes, "Written for the Consideration and help of all those Members who are interested in care with the order and Use of the Joint Interest of the Church By David Meacham Overseer of the Temporal Interest of the Church."
