Christened by Hitler as “the man with the iron heart,” General Heydrich was instrumental in outlaying plans for the mass deportation and execution of thousands upon thousands of Jews and other ‘undesirables.’ On May 27, 1942, a Czechoslovakian team that had been living in exile in Great Britain reentered the country to act out Operation Anthropoid, a specific plot to assassinate Heydrich. Although not immediately successful, Heydrich died within a week from injuries sustained during the attack. Description: Artist: ALBERT-ÉMILE ARTIGUE (1850-1927) Size: 9 1/2 x 23 3/4 in./24.2 x 60.4 cm Imp. F. Champenois, Paris When Mucha declined to renew his contract with the printer Champenois in 1904, Artigue was one of the artists the firm hired to replace him. And while there are certainly many strong Mucha-esque elements in this piece -- the swirling smoke, the embellished floral boarder, the geometric background -- it seems that Artigue drew more from the Far East for inspiration in this perfume advertisement.

Description: Artist: ADRIEN BARRÈRE (1877-1931) Size: 14 1/2 x 20 in./36.7 x 50.3 cm Although he started his career as an apprentice to a jeweler, Armand Ménard juggled the letters of his last name to come up with his stage presence: Dranem, the bumbling, sad-faced character who sang and danced his way through all the best cabarets and café-concerts in Paris. Here, he is shown after one of his many performance being showered with flowers -- a frequent occurrence, no doubt, as he became one of the most wealthy and well-loved actors of his day. Description: Artist: PAUL BERTHON (1872-1909) Size: 21 1/2 x 16 3/8 in./54.6 x 41.5 cm "Of all the posterists who also designed decorative panels, Berthon was perhaps the best qualified to do a series on flowers personified as women since his women are so flower-like–delicate creatures, so light as to nearly be ethereal, seen in the softest of focus and tinged with the gentlest of pastel hues. The flower here is a variety of white rose; the woman a shy, soulful spirit passing by in our dreams” (Gold, p. 137). One of an edition of 100 hand-signed & numbered copies (#61/100).

Berthon always interprets women with an exquisite finesse–in terms of their spirituality rather than their physical substance” (Gold, p. 136). Description: Artist: PAUL BERTHON (1872-1909) Size: 17 1/8 x 23 in./43.5 x 58.4 cm There is a double-entendre at play in the title of this poster. While ‘fils’ is most commonly translated as ‘son,’ it can also mean ‘threads.’ It is often referenced that the Virgin Mary was sewing at the time of the Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel descended from Heaven to inform her that she would bear the Son of God. So, in a way, both meanings of ‘fils’ are pertinent to this image. This decorative panel is hand-signed by the artist.

Description: Artist: MIHÁLY BIRÓ (1886-1948) Size: 37 3/4 x 97 3/4 in./95.8 x 248.2 cm Biró was best known for his political and anti-war posters in Hungary, but during his Vienna period (1910-1928), he created many posters for commercial products. “In contrast to his political posters which were mostly printed in two colors and were designed according to the seriousness of their contents, the posters for art and commerce were mostly colorful and often times carried by a sense of humor and a cleverly staged lightness” (Biró, p. 25). Here, ingeniously turning the brand name into the base for a boudoir light, Abadie cigarette rolling papers isn’t the only thing smoldering in the room. A sensually rare, two-sheet design.

Description: Artist: CHESLEY BONESTELL (1888-1986) Size: 27 x 40 5/8 in./68.6 x 103.2 cm Latham Litho., Long Island City, N.Y. A romanticized nighttime view of the New York Central Building, a major element in the Grand Central Station complex, on 46th Street in Manhattan, looking south on Park Avenue. Almost fifty years after the 1929 edifice was designed by the noted architectural firm of Warren & Wetmore, it was renamed the Helmsley Building to honor its owner, New York real-estate mogul Harry Helmsley. With the emphasis here on glamour and prestige, we get only a hint of the ambitious design at the base of the 34-story building: two arched portals which allow automobiles to bypass street traffic below, flanked, in turn, by smaller rectangular portals opening onto pedestrian shopping arcades. Surprisingly, the building today looks better than it did at the time of the poster, thanks to the efforts of Helmsley, who revised the roof and facade in 1978 with gilding. Sadly, it’s difficult not to mention the marring of this spectacular urban vista by the inclusion of the 58-story high Pan Am building, whose Met Life renaming did nothing to change its invasive shortcomings.

Description: Artist: PIERRE BONNARD (1867-1947) Size: 23 1/2 x 31 1/2 in./59.6 x 80 cm Imp. Edw. Ancourt, Paris “Bonnard was just 24 when he made his first foray into lithography and poster design, but his initial effort, France-Champagne, was a stunning success. The great poster connoisseur, Maindron, immediately called it ‘one of the most interesting works to be seen on the walls of Paris.’ It created a marked contrast to Chéret’s colorful fairyland: it was sparse and subtle, making the most of a few strokes of black against a muted yellow and pink background, with ingenious composition and fluid lettering. Some saw in it the first major advance in the art of poster-size prints since the work of Daumier a generation earlier” (Wine Spectator, 57). Jane Abdy adds the interesting note: “He received a hundred francs for this ebullient design, in which the froth of the champagne foams like a bubble bath. Toulouse-Lautrec so admired it in the hoardings that he sought an introduction to Bonnard, and the two artists were intrigued by each other’s talents. Bonnard took Toulouse-Lautrec to Ancourt, his printers” (Abdy, p. 90).

Description: Artist: PIERRE BONNARD (1867-1947) Size: 23 3/8 x 30 3/4 in./59.4 x 78 cm Imp. Edw. Ancourt, Paris Bonnard’s best-known and most enigmatic poster advertises the monthly La Revue Blanche, published by his close friends the Natansons. The significance of this image eludes us today and seems not to have been all that clear when published. Maindron admitted that he could not understand it, but found that “nonetheless it’s quite curious.” Bouvet attempts an analysis: “the strange form [at right] apparently following the young woman, is in fact a man, seen from behind, an opera hat on his head and coat collar turned up, reading the poster for the Revue on the wall” (p. 36). The design itself is quite ahead of its time, creating a geometric pattern out of other posters for the publication, while simultaneously contrasting the sassy pose and voluptuous costume of the female reader against the grisly nature of the street urchin-cum-newsie to her right.
