Here again Broders is able to express, as by magic, the light of the Mediterranean–light–always light” (Broders/Travel, pp. 13-14). Description: Artist: LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Size: 36 7/8 x 51 in./93.7 x 129.4 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris “The mission of this orange-haired dancer was to attract visitors at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair to come to the Folies-Bergère....Cappiello chose a variant of the can-can dancer from his first Frou-Frou poster of the year before. Still rooted in his early caricature style, it is nevertheless an excellent poster, with its flat colors and eye-catching quality. The image was also issued in an edition of 100 copies, before letters (of which this is one), and an extremely limited silk edition of only 10 copies. Although all contemporary references make it clear that the Frou-Frou poster was Cappiello’s first, a black-and-white flyer was issued which proclaimed this to be ‘The First Poster of Cappiello.’ It is not clear if this was also issued in 1900” (Cappiello/Rennert, p. 39). His emerging style of bright colors and flat planes is already evident in the woman's red hair, green dress and the brown background” (Cappiello/Rennert, p. 43). "The pharmacist, Léon Lajaunie, set up his pharmacy in Toulouse. After developing several invigorating elixirs, he turned to cachou, as an aromatic for perfuming the breath whose strong flavor covered smoker's breath" (Health Posters, p. 169). Description: Artist: LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Size: 6 1/4 x 8 7/8 in./15.8 x 22.6 cm While this is a completely different design from the one which actually became a poster (see PAI-LI, 175), Cappiello’s initial take on the Suchard brand is arguably better, with a spry imp strewing chocolate bars to the world. Chocolat Suchard began as a family-owned Swiss firm, founded in 1825 in Neuchâtel. A boom order from the King of Prussia thrust the company into the global market in 1842, winning a heap of international prizes and accolades, and ultimately making it the largest chocolate producer in the world by the turn of the century. The text is a tip-on. Provenance: From the archives of the Devambez printing company.

Description: Artist: LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Size: 16 x 22 3/8 in./40.7 x 56.7 cm What is perhaps most interesting about this gleeful maquette for Long John Whiskey is the fact that we can see evidence of Cappiello’s creative process -- two large versions of the bottle are shown in outline elsewhere in the design. As he normally chose oversized depictions of a product in his art, it is unusual that he went for the understated simplicity of a true-to-size bottle. Cappiello’s atelier stamp is on the verso.

Description: Artist: LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Size: 16 7/8 x 23 3/8 in./42.8 x 59.4 cm Created during his time in Italy working for Campari, this evocative design of a monkey plucking a bottle of the bitter beverage from the trees seems more akin to his illustration work than the punchy pizzaz of his posters. There is an intimacy, a delicate charm, which makes our focus more on the curious animal than the product being sold. The original stamp from the artist’s studio is located in the lower right.

Description: Artist: LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Size: 19 3/8 x 25 3/8 in./49.2 x 64.4 cm Although notorious for eating regular-sized people, this Giant opts instead for a large serving of canned cod. Meanwhile, his potential human meal is attempting to rescue the fish for himself rather than taking this opportunity to flee. This smaller figure, however, does not appear in the final design for Merlus, a brand in the Gargantua line of tinned foods.

Devambez, Paris In one of Cappiello’s most clever designs, he provides us with visual evidence that Nitrolian truly is the fastest drying paint on the market: almost as soon as the man gets down his first coat of red, a lady in white whizzes past, the paint remaining perfectly intact.
