Description: Artist: LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Size: 51 x 79 in./129.7 x 200.5 cm Imp. Devambez, Paris Founded by a group of local vintners in 1838, under the name “Company of the Vineyard Owners of Cognac,” Cognac Monnet did not obtain its current name until 1897 when Jean-Gabriel Monnet became the owner of the society. Here, the slogan “sunshine in a glass” is interpreted quite literally by Cappiello, as a Bacchus-like nymph expresses adoration for the beverage.

Buvez du Vin. 1933

Description: Artist: LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Size: 47 x 63 1/2 in/119.4 x 161.6 cm Imp. Devambez, Paris In 1933, President Roosevelt repealed the National Prohibition Act against the sale, consumption, and transportation of alcohol in the United States. While such laws were never in effect in France, it is interesting to consider that Cappiello was commissioned to create this poster for the French wine industry that same year, promoting enjoying life by drinking wine. As most vineyards in the United States were in ruins, and those that weren’t made cheap, vile wine, imported wine, especially from France, was the only means of obtaining any grape alcohol of quality. While probably not aimed at an American audience, this poster is a reminder that wine was no longer vilified the world over. This is the larger format version of the poster.

Condition Report: A-/ Unobtrusive horizontal fold.

Description: Artist: LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Size: 17 3/4 x 23 3/8 in./45 x 59.3 cm Never one to let a good design idea go to waste, Cappiello frequently gave potential clients images of sprightly young things embracing oversized products. Here, a raven-haired pixie reclines effortlessly into a bed of leaves and lemons, promoting a lemon-infused water. On the verso, a note from the Devambez archives marks this maquette as being unpublished.

Description: Artist: LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Size: 23 3/4 x 38 1/4 in./60.3 x 97.2 cm Editions Publi-Vente, Paris Paris hosted a World’s Fair in 1937 and “this is one of a number of general posters created for that occasion, one that specifically promotes travel to France. But in contrast to practically all posters attempting to attract the population of a foreign country to travel to your home turf, Cappiello shows the remarkable, classic restraint customary in his later posters. The allegorical statuary of Marianne atop a patriotic French relief relays a dignified call to travel that one can appreciate for its simple beauty as much for the unmistakable message it sends” (Cappiello/Rennert, p. 323).

It served various causes over the years; during World War II, for example, it issued a clandestine newspaper of the French Resistance” (Cappiello/Rennert, p. 316).

The Mossant firm, in existence since the 1860s, was known for high-quality hats -- especially men’s hats, whose expensive models were made from pile of rabbit and hare -- and Cappiello conveys it perfectly, making it look easy in the bargain. The company closed in 1981” (Cappiello/Rennert, p. 324).

Description: Artist: LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Size: 11 x 13 7/8 in./27.9 x 35.2 cm Cappiello's portrait of Sarah Bernhardt is a masterwork of elegant brevity: dramatic, efluvious, and overflowing with charm. One of the many cover designs created by the caricaturist on the verge of becoming a master. "In April of 1903, there was another special issue, this time in the magazine Le Théatre, titled "Le Théatre de Cappiello," with thirty-eight designs, in color, of actors and actresses either in stage costumes for roles that they had made famous, or in studio poses. Two renowned drama critics supplied the text" (Cappiello/Rennert, p. 10). This is the complete issue.

Description: Artist: HENRI CASSIERS (1858-1944) Size: 49 1/2 x 36 1/4 in./125.6 x 92 cm O. de Rycker, Bruxelles The rich colors and fine design of a mother and child looking over the harbor at the Red Star Line’s Westerland ship make this a poster of enduring grace and beauty. Operating from Antwerp under the Belgian flag, the Red Star Line was a serious competitor to the Holland-Amerika Line until the Depression forced the company into bankruptcy. This boat was eventually repurchased by Holland-Amerika in 1939, and continued to run the Antwerp-New York route under the Red Star name.

Description: Artist: HENRI CASSIERS (1888-1944) Size: 61 1/8 x 45 in./155.3 x 114.2 cm O. De Rycker & Mendel, Bruxelles For a Belgian seaside resort near Ostend, Cassiers gives us a perspective characteristic of his warm, sympathetic folkloric bent rather than the expected sleek and chic styles of his contemporaries in this genre. He offers a charming contrast between two worlds: the peasants in colorful clothes in front of their cottage on the left, faintly amused with the smart tourists marching toward their grand hotel in the distance. The cigar-smoking caddy in the middle adds a fine social note, while the panel at the bottom illustrates the resort’s name -- “Cock o’ the Waves.”

Normandie / New York. 1935

Lot 219: Normandie / New York. 1935

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: A. M. CASSANDRE (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) Size: 24 3/8 x 39 3/8 in./62 x 100 cm Alliance Graphique/L. Danel, Paris One of the most famous images in poster art, Cassandre’s design for the Normandie is as powerful as it is magnificent. “The arrival in New York Harbor of the gigantic super-liner Normandie will inaugurate a new era of transatlantic travel. She will set new standards of luxury and speed, steadiness comfort and safety...not merely the largest liner afloat (79,280 tons)...but in almost every respect a new kind of liner!” (Transatlantique Advertisement). And in almost every respect, this Cassandre masterpiece was a new way of selling the glamour and excitement of ocean liner travel. A deceptively simple, but impressive design with the ship towering above us, a flight of small birds at the bottom, giving the image as much scale and strength as the imposing hull itself. The classic design appeared with several variants of text at the bottom, this being the most rare with just New York being noted.

Description: Artist: A. M. CASSANDRE (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) Size: 28 1/4 x 37 3/4 in./71.7 x 95.8 cm Nijgh & Van Ditmar, Rotterdam (not shown) “In the 1924 Salon des Indépendants a painting titled Boatdeck by the American artist Gerald Murphy was exhibited. Although this gigantic thirteen-foot painting is lost, the black-and-white photograph that still exists is sufficient evidence that Cassandre saw the painting and borrowed heavily from it in designing [this] poster for the Statendam. The obvious similarities are seen in a decision to use only the small but very dramatic top deck of a passenger ship, angled smokestacks, funnels, and halyards. Where Cassandre departs from Murphy is in the simplification and distortion of the rendering....Cassandre’s poster, with its experiment in playing with scale, is certainly more unorthodox” (Brown & Reinhold, 14).

Description: Artist: A. M. CASSANDRE (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) Size: 23 7/8 x 39 in./60.7 x 94 cm Alliance Graphique, Paris “Instead of ‘a sleek oceangoing vessel,’ as writers often describe modern ships, Cassandre’s rendition [of The Atlantic] becomes a mammoth wall of steel that towers in fantastic and unreal fashion over a minuscule tugboat. He further adds to this startling effect by collapsing the upper decks and the three smokestacks so that they appear almost flat. [He] also distorts perspective in an ingenious way; the stern of the ship extends into the front of the top decks as well as down from them ... into the ocean to form a reflection. When taken together, all of these elements, along with the block of text, form one awesome rectangular shape that passes through a ‘wreath’ formed by the coming together of the smoke from the tugboat and the steamship” (Brown & Reinhold, p. 16).

Description: Artist: A. M. CASSANDRE (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) Size: 23 7/8 x 39 1/8 in./60.7 x 99.3 cm Imp. L. Danel, Lille The restaurant car was meant to be considered on par with the sleeping car -- an expression of luxury and convenience given to the passenger. Everything from the table linens to the silverware to the food itself was of the highest quality -- Christofle, Limoges, and white-gloved waitstaff were commonly seen, if not expected. The allure of these moving restaurants was so great that pamphlets were produced promoting Christmas and other holidays in the train’s dining car. While Cassandre’s poster does not specify a time of year or even a particular destination, it still maintains that air of desire when portraying food service upon the train. It also reflects newfound interest in photomontage.

Description: Artist: A. M. CASSANDRE (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) Size: 28 1/4 x 41 in./71.7 x 104.2 cm Imp. L. Danel, Lille Cassandre created an almost hypnotic fascination with his lines of gleaming rails — a motif that he used in many variations. “Linear perspective is only one of the components of LMS, however. It is skillfully combined with a three-dimensional close-up of a switch bar in the foreground. The switch bar’s disproportionately large dimensions and its realistic rendering accentuate the poster’s depth with great effectiveness” (Mouron, p. 52). Rather than noting “the best way” below the red text, it instead indicates the complete name of the line.

Description: Artist: A. M. CASSANDRE (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) Size: 24 1/2 x 39 1/8 in./62.2 x 99.4 cm Imp. L. Dannel, Lille La Route Bleue was a luxury bus service run by the P.L.M. Railroad from London to the Côte d’Azur. While no bus may be in sight, we are somehow aware that Cassandre has placed the viewer inside the vehicle -- the trees are not represented by the black geometric squares, but by the ghostly white outlines, leaving the vacant spaces between the shapes to imply the widows of the actual bus continuing down the road as far as the eye can see. It is the absolute opposite of cramped travel, the passenger meant to feel as comfortable as if he were sitting atop an open platform, gazing at the world as it flies by. It offers the viewer a chance at pure infinity.

Released in 1929, this deluxe passenger locomotive went between Paris and Antwerp, stopping in Brussels along the way. As can be gleaned from this poster, speed was of the utmost importance, the ghost of steam being the only indicator that the train ever passed this station.

Description: Artist: A. M. CASSANDRE (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) Size: 45 3/8 x 19 3/4 in./115.3 x 50 cm Alliance Graphique, Paris This triptych appeared in three separate sheets and in two sizes. It also appeared in a smaller format, the three on one sheet without any border (see PAI-XLI, 164), and in one variant in which the figures grow in size from left to right (see PAI-XVI, 185). This is the rarest of the smaller-format versions, with a blue and brown border. The image was also used in many marketing devices, from menu holders to ashtrays -- and the public never seemed to tire of it. For the francophone, there’s also a clever pun involved (roughly translated: Dubious-Good-Dubonnet), but regardless of language, format or medium, it’s the graphic appeal that puts this design over the top.

CASSANDRE (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) Size: 31 1/2 x 47 3/8 in./80.2 x 120.2 cm Alliance Graphique, Paris With automobile production on the rise, the demand for safety glass was at an all-time high by the 1920s. To meet this demand, Ford Motor Company teamed up with Pilkington, an English glass manufacturer, and formed Triplex in 1923. Here, Cassandre takes on the difficult task of advertising safety glass without actually showing it in action via injury or destruction. Alternatively, we are met with a confident, calm truck driver seated behind a hovering sheet of Triplex -- which, while illogically placed, instantly conveys the point.

Description: Artist: A. M. CASSANDRE (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) Size: 47 1/4 x 62 3/4 in./120 x 159.2 cm Hachard, Paris Cassandre’s simple abstraction of a face contrasted with the realistic rendering of the product–a cap, “the champions’ choice”–is a textbook example of how a bold, direct statement can command our attention. Noting the influence of Oskar Schlemmer and Picasso on this design, Brown & Reinhold find that “what is most subtle and interesting about the poster is the suggestion of a multiple perspective, which gives a simultaneous straight-on and cocked-to-the-right viewpoint of the face” (p. 13). Grand-Sport, whose 1920s advertisements emphasized that all the great sport champions wore this cap, was a brand of the Sools hat firm, for which Cassandre produced another fine poster (see PAI-XLVIII, 162). This is the rare large format.

Condition Report: B/ Slight tears at folds & edges.

Description: Artist: A.M. CASSANDRE (ADOLPHE MOURON, 1901-1968) Size: 38 5/8 x 58 1/8 in./98 x 147.6 cm Imp. Hachard, Paris Starting in 1905, the Sachplakat, or Object Poster, became all the rage in Germany. In it, the poster zooms in on solely the product being offered, rather than cluttering up the design with happy customers, sensual ladies, or picturesque landscapes. Here, Cassandre masterfully embraces that style, simply showing off the geometric tin case in which these licorice pastilles are housed.

Danel, Paris Founded in 1865, Bonal is a sweet vermouth-like aperitif wine, infused with quinine, gentian, and many of the herbs featured in Chartreuse. Dedicated to its role as a pre-dinner beverage, its motto has always been “open the appetite” -- a slogan which Cassandre most literally depicts in this poster. This is the second version of the image, printed two years after the original with slightly different coloration.

Description: Artist: A. M. CASSANDRE (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) Size: 12 1/4 x 18 3/8 in./31 x 46.6 cm One of France’s most cherished ballerinas, Chauviré ultimately became the director of the Paris Opera Ballet and holds the Légion d’Honneur for her contribution to the art. By 1941, she was the étoile of the company, performing to critical acclaim in both classical and experimental ballets. This drawing was most likely created some time around December of 1947, while she was performing the lead in Sauguet’s Les Mirages. At that time, Cassandre had been commissioned to design both the sets and costumes. This pencil drawing is dedicated by the artist to Madame Gilbert Cournard, owner of a Parisian gallery dedicated to the history of dance.

Description: Artist: A. M. CASSANDRE (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) Size: 12 1/2 x 12 1/2 in./31.6 x 31.6 cm Published by Réne Kister, Geneva The theatrical decor and costumes for the Aix-en-Provence International Music Festival’s production of Don Giovanni were designed by Cassandre, and this publication features sixteen luscious full-page, full-color plates documenting his work. “To understand what was truly characteristic about Cassandre’s style as a scenic painter, there is no better guide than the following text: ‘At the time when the organizers . . . asked me to design the settings for a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Aix had no opera house. . . The upshot was that the Festival organizers commissioned me to design, along with the settings . . . an open air theater in which the opera could be staged . . . The theater had to answer the dramatic contingencies of Mozart’s work; it also had to take into account certain practical considerations . . . It had to be a temporary structure . . . so that once the Festival ended, the courtyard of the Archbishop’s palace could be restored to its normal urban function . . . the architectural rhythms of the site had to be respected–its style, its proportions, its module and even its color. The solution to so many different problems created . . . a certain number of . . . requirements which . . . could only be be satisfied with the stage design” (Mouron, p. 128). This is #631/3,000.

Description: Artist: JEAN-DOMINIQUE VAN CAULAERT (1897-1979) Size: 38 x 58 1/4 in./96.5 x 148 cm Friends with both Maurice Chevalier and the writer Colette, Marguerite Moreno was best known as an older character actress of both stage and screen. She was frequently type-cast to play much older than she was, often appearing in a Miss Havisham-esque costume of ruffles, chalky powder, and sunken eye makeup. Here, in Impressionistic regalia, her overdone visage announces her tour in “Pas Folle La Folle.”

Description: Artist: JEAN-DOMINIQUE VAN CAULAERT (1897-1979) Size: 14 1/4 x 21 7/8 in./36.4 x 55.5 cm Imp. Delattre, Paris “Féerie de Paris” was such a hit that the box office of the Casino de Paris had to be enlarged. The theme of the revue was a tour of Paris monuments led by Mistinguett wearing a six-foot high Eiffel Tower of a costume. Van Caulaert could only fit part of it into this design, the rest tumbling outside of the frame. The poster – produced for the enduring success of the show’s run "d’après” the previous year’s original design – certainly doesn’t hint at the fact that Mistinguett was already 64 at the time of the performance. This is the smaller format.
