Casino Skating-Bal. 1876

Lot 251: Casino Skating-Bal. 1876

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 15 7/8 x 23 1/2 in./40.2 x 59.7 cm Imp. J. Chéret, Paris By the mid-19th century, roller skating was growing as a popular pastime. The wheels were becoming more maneuverable, and, in 1876 (the year of this poster) the first toe-break was invented. The year prior, the first public roller rink in Paris opened, the success of which prompted this poster by Chéret. We are shown a certain level of class and elegance associated with roller skating, as well as some early impractical elements, such as high heels and cumbersome skirts. Accompanied by a “brillant orchestre,” such a romanticized activity was certainly worth the one franc admission price.

Condition Report: A-/ Slight tears & stains, mostly in margin.

Description: Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 34 1/2 x 48 7/8 in./87.6 x 124.2 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris With prototypes as early as 1881, the Théâtrophone was one of the first examples of live-transmission sound. For a small fee (50 centimes per five minutes), submitted much like a contemporary payphone, one could essentially ‘dial in’ to a live music performance and listen. Special prices were given to those who subscribed to the service or opted to host a machine in their own home. Marcel Proust was incidentally a huge fan of the system, writing about it in much of his correspondence. The company liquidated in 1932, mostly due to the rising popularity of radio broadcasting.

Les Arts. 1891

Description: Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: Each: 32 1/4 x 48 in./82 x 122.4 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris Maindron makes it clear that it was Chéret who invented “placards décoratifs, which are neither prints nor posters, but which contain a bit of both. . . There is nothing to say about these designs other than that they are perfect” (pp. 178-79). Abdy calls these four decorative panels “triumphs of color and printing” (p. 31). Being freed in them from having to sell a product, Chéret let his imagination soar – and these light-footed nymphs representing the Four Arts are the first clear examples of what was to adorn the walls of Paris for the next decade: the unabashedly hedonistic, carefree spirits that became known as “Chérettes.”

Description: Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 33 1/2 x 47 3/8 in./85 x 120.2 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris Possibly the most unique image of Yvette Guilbert, in that it looks nothing like any other depiction of her. Normally presented as a severe, sophisticated redhead, this design by Chéret showcases her in a more lighthearted, girlish manner, complete with blonde waves. A true testament to the fact that the artist had a very particular style from which he rarely, if ever, deviated.

Description: Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 32 5/8 x 48 3/8 in./83 x 117.7 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris Successor to the Palace Théâtre at 15 rue Blanche, the Nouveau Théâtre opened on October 17, 1891 at the same address, adjoining the dance hall and café-concert of the Casino de Paris. To inaugurate the stage, the owner chose Scaramouche, starring the red-haired mime Felicia Mallet. For this pantomime about a commedia dell’arte-type scamp, Chéret departs from his usual depictions of women in décolletage to show the performer in her covered-up harlequin costume.

Description: Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 34 1/8 x 48 1/2 in./86.8 x 123 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris As the oldest surviving music hall in Paris, the Olympia was originally opened in 1889 under the name “Montagnes Russes.” While this was also the French word for roller coaster (see Lot 255), there is no evidence of there ever being an actual ride in the particularly narrow building. This is the poster from the establishment’s re-opening in 1893, when it was renamed Olympia, a name which stays with it even today. This is the larger format.

Description: Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 33 x 45 1/2 in./83.7 x 115.5 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris By the age of 17, Louise Balthy was receiving rave reviews at the Eldorado in Paris. Although trained in ballet, her true talents came out when performing comic songs. These cheerful, humorous ditties would take her to the stage at La Scala, the Palais Royal, the Bodinière, and, as seen here, the Alcazar d’Eté. She has been immortalized not only by Chéret, but also by Lautrec and Cappiello (see PAI-LVII, 205) in a variety of her vivacious public appearances.

Description: Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 34 3/8 x 47 5/8 in./87.5 x 121 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris The Folies Bergère commissioned over 60 posters from Chéret during his prolific career. Here, six diaphanously-clad ballerinas leap across the page, promoting Armand Silvestre’s ballet et pantomime, “Fleur de Lotus.” Reviews from the premier claim that it is a Loie Fuller-like performance populated with clowns and delicate dancers. There is also mention of a ‘wondrous machine’ which rains diamonds down upon the audience ‘like tears’ from electric lamps (L’Ermitage 1893).

Description: Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 33 1/4 x 47 1/2 in./84.3 x 120.6 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris When plans to take down the Eiffel Tower after the end of the 1889 World’s Fair fell through, the Flamand restaurant on its first level was converted into the 400-seat Theatre de la Tour Eiffel by Charles Bodinier. In an attempt to make it a more trendy and artsy venue, the “Paris-Chicago” revue, written by co-owner Alphonse Frank, opened on May 16, 1893, to great success. Here, Chéret depicts the many characters of the show joyously floating through lithographic space.

Chaix, Paris Created in 1863 by Angelo Mariani, Vin Mariani is simply a combination of Bordeaux wine and coca leaves. The restored ‘health and vitality’ mentioned in this poster, as well as the model’s visual exuberance, is the result of the small amount of cocaine laced in the beverage -- an ingredient used by many popular drinks of that era, including Coca-Cola. Mariani was also one of the first publicists to recognized the value of celebrity endorsements, and succeeded in getting Thomas Edison, Queen Victoria, and two popes, as well as then-famous musicians, doctors, public figures, and comedians to praise the product in his many advertisements.

Chaix, Paris The January 20 Courrier Francais supplement of this magnificent Palais de Glace design features the charms of an enrapturing skater whose sunny disposition all but melts the ice. Description: Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 14 3/4 x 21 5/8 in./37.4 x 55 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris "In 1846 Paris wine agent Joseph Dubonnet decided to enter the business with a product of his own. With medicinal bitters just coming into vogue, he chose to base his drink on quinine, and to disguise its bitter taste, he mixed it with sweet wine from Greece. The result quickly gained wide acceptance; by the end of the century the company was producing three million bottles a year and exporting to many foreign countries. For this poster, Chéret worked with a live model–a charming soubrette named Lise Fleuron–and the Dubonnet family cat. The scene was so enchanting that the actress began to bill herself as “The Girl With The Dubonnet Cat,” and even the cat was held over by popular demand, appearing again in another poster the following year” (Gold, p. 34). This is the Courrier Francais version.

Description: Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 15 3/8 x 22 3/4 in./39 x 57.7 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris It may be snowing, but this heavily-bundled Chérette is prancing down the street as if it were spring. Why such a sunny disposition? Well, while the rest of us are coughing and sneezing from November til March, she has wisely chosen Pastilles Géraudel to fend off the first signs of a cold. As the slogan says, “If you cough, take Géraudel Pastilles” -- wise words, which the company used in all of its ads from France to China. “This is one of the most striking examples of the work by Jules Chéret...The clarity of the color is astonishing and denotes the influence of Impressionist painting” (Health Posters, p. 14). This is the Courrier Francais supplement from January 19, 1896.

Its dynamic hinges on the opposition between the violence of the storm and the serene resistance of the young girl . . . This symbolism is engaged to support the message of the publicity slogan [‘For Colds–Coughs–Bronchitis’]. Pastilles Poncelet were made from tar, licorice, ipecac, codeine and potassium chlorate” (Health Posters, p. 31).
