Lot 301: Jeune Fille Assise. 1901

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 13 1/2 x 20 1/4 in./34.2 x 51.5 cm Best known for his renderings of his famous Chérettes -- exuberant blondes leaping with wild abandon to celebrate the arts -- this lovely little girl stands out within Chéret’s oeuvre. Her demure position, so innocent and proper, imply her desire to be seen as the perfect young lady. Not a trace of sensuality in her sweet smile, her chestnut curls and plump folded hands are a testament to the virtues of youth.

Description: Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 34 1/2 x 49 in./87.5 x 124.4 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris This is the before-lettering version of Chéret’s charming poster for Les Fantoches, a puppet-show extravaganza staged at the theater of the Musée Grevin, a frequent client of Chéret’s. The design was so eye-catching that it was also used to announce a Fête des Artistes at the venue (see PAI-XV, 222), as well as a variety of other shows.

La Fileuse (The Spinner–see PAI-XLVI, 272) and La Dentellière (The Lace-Maker), seen here. Elaborately dressed and dripping with newly-stitched lace, this proud Chérette beams at us over her shoulder.

Folies-Bergére / Miss Mabell Stuart. ca. 1890

Lot 304: Folies-Bergére / Miss Mabell Stuart. ca. 1890

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: ALFRED CHOUBRAC (1853-1902) Size: 38 1/4 x 59 1/8 in./97.2 x 150 cm F. Appel, Paris Choubrac created a strikingly similar design for the same performer in which her golden hair billows out around her as the stage lights make her dress positively sheer. The subtle differences may have been because this poster originally included a tip-on for Loie Mystèrieuse, a Loie Fuller impersonator. Obviously, all three acts are basically the same, proving how popular Miss Fuller’s routine had become.

In those images, she is often alluring and seductive, whereas here she comes across as demure and sweet.

Description: Artist: ALFRED CHOUBRAC (1853-1902) Size: 30 3/4 x 45 1/2 in./78 x 115.5 cm Lith. F. Appel, Paris A long-standing theatrical and literary conceit, the idea of a bored king in need of new entertainment has appeared in endless forms since the 18th century. Here, it allowed the Folies-Bergère to create an elaborate ballet and pantomime in which a throng of courtiers attempt to catch the attention of a weary monarch.

Description: Artist: JEAN COCTEAU (1889-1963) Size: 30 1/8 x 45 3/4 in./76.6 x 116 cm Imp. Watelet, Paris Opening during the Nazi Occupation of France, Michel Duran’s Boléro was a well-received three-act comedy, later made into a film. Cocteau was also opening a play of his own in Paris at the time, so his collaboration with Duran on the poster for this play is both odd and interesting. The design itself is understated and lovely.

Description: Artist: JEAN COCTEAU (1889-1963) Size: 44 1/2 x 69 in./113 x 175.2 cm Eugene Verneau & Henri Chachoin, Paris (not shown) As a writer, painter, and decorator, Cocteau was closely affiliated with the world of dance and theatre. This early design -- seen here without the text panel announcing that the April 19th performance in question is being given by the Ballet Russes -- “shows Vaslav Nijinsky, one of the greatest male dancers of all time...With Diaghilev as his patron, he rose to international stardom, famed for his legendary elevation, his exotic appearance, and his consummate artistry. For him Fokine created Le Spectre de la Rose (this being the poster for the premiere) and he excelled in such other Fokine ballets as Scheherazade, Dances from Prince Igor, Les Sylphides ... His career in Western Europe lasted only a decade, for he went insane and lived out his life away from the stage” (Dance Posters, p. 12). This is the larger format version of the poster.

Josephine Baker & Partners at the Theatre des Champs-Élysées. 1925

Lot 311: Josephine Baker & Partners at the Theatre des Champs-Élysées. 1925

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) Size: 6 x 9 in./15.2 x 22.8 cm While his most famous image of Josephine Baker is surely the Revue Nègre poster, Colin had ample time to create dozens of compositions featuring the infamous entertainer. Sitting in on many of the rehearsals for the show, he frequently sketched the performers in action, most especially Josephine. While many of those went on to inspire subsequent works by the artist, such as Le Tumulte Noir, some resulted in larger paintings (see PAI-LV, 256) or simple renderings of the cast during dress rehearsal, such as this. Here we see a sophisticatedly dressed Baker in brown standing alongside two flamboyantly-attired black performers. This image is unique in that it does not showcase Josephine’s overtly sexualized nature, which was more often the subject of Colin’s work.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) Size: 4 1/4 x 6 in./11 x 15 cm Featuring Colin’s signature depiction of a piano at a highly raked angle, this drawing is reminiscent of his design for Wiener & Doucet (see Colin, p. 13) or André Renault (see PAI-LV, 262). Yet, it is more complicated than either of those compositions, with minimal but lively jazz musicians popping out from every corner, brass instruments in hand as they wail alongside an invisible pianist.

He would later go on to a career in screenwriting and acting. Here, Colin depicts him in sharp profile against a moody Art Deco background.

Description: Artist: PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) Size: 45 1/4 x 60 7/8 in./115 x 154.6 cm Atelier Paul Colin, Paris Trained by Ernest Belcher in Los Angeles, Georgia Graves quickly became one of the more celebrated dancers in the Western World. This poster was created for her time at the Folies-Bergère, during which she combined both dance and acrobatics to create wildly exuberant routines. She frequently utilized giant balls (”bubbles”), oversized fans, and other large-scale props, creating a half-burlesque, half-circus performance.

Josephine Baker / Columbia. 1930

Lot 315: Josephine Baker / Columbia. 1930

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) Size: 26 1/2 x 38 1/8 in./67.3 x 96.7 cm In 1930, Josephine Baker opened a new show at the Casino de Paris entitled “Paris qui Remue.” That July, Columbia Records released a recording of the production. The poster shows Baker in transition -- the exotically-posed dancers of her Revue Negre days are mere sketches in the background, while a more sophisticated, Western version of the star coyly pushes itself forward. This is the preliminary maquette of the poster in which the banana dance figures are more pronounced.

Delattre, Paris While no information remains regarding Mary Ditrix, it is obvious that she took her stage name and general ‘look’ from the famous Marlene Dietrich. The poster, however, is absolutely marvelous with the performer raising her arms enthusiastically above her head as three sketches of flamenco dancers circle around her torso.

Description: Artist: PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) Size: 47 x 61 7/8 in./119.5 x 157 cm Imp. A. Karcher, Paris. In a very simple, direct way, Colin captures the characteristic slouch and somewhat dejected mien of this French chanteuse, who toward the end of her life struggled with alcoholism. As a young dancer, Marguerite Boulch had been Maurice Chevalier’s partner both on and off stage. When she was replaced in both senses by Mistinguett, she went crazy and threatened to kill him. Afterwards, she switched from dancing to singing, adopting the stage-name Fréhel.

Description: Artist: PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) Size: 22 1/8 x 29 3/4 in./56.2 x 75.5 cm Imp. Bedos, Paris Originally created for the 1945 Nazi Crime Exhibition, presented by the French government under the auspices of the United Nations War Crime Commission, this brutal Colin image was reissued twenty years later to commemorate the liberation of the concentration camps. When Colin, an agnostic, was questioned about his decision to illustrate humanity’s suffering in such a Christ-like manner, he replied, “Yes, if you insist, it’s Christ. But it’s really suffering, torture, humanity. I am anti-church. I believe that religions make war ... So if you want to stigmatize, to evoke suffering, the fashionable martyrdom to use is that of Christ ... Here you see, in this poster, a poor deported woman, nailed to the swastika. We should leave it at that” (Colin, p. 11). This is the smaller format version of the poster.

Description: Artist: PIERRE COMBA (1859-1934) Size: 30 x 41 1/2 in./76 x 105.4 cm Imp. Moullot, Marseille Best known for his detailed watercolor landscapes and genre scenes, Comba created no more than three posters throughout his lengthy career. Description: Artist: AUSTIN COOPER (1890-1964) Size: 24 5/8 x 39 3/4 in./62.4 x 101 cm The Baynard Press, London Cooper grew up in Manitoba on the Canadian prairie. At thirteen, he was sent to Cardiff, Wales, to study art. He returned to Canada and began his career as a commercial artist in Montreal, went back to Britain as a soldier during World War I and settled permanently in London in 1922. Over the following two decades he produced fifty-four fine posters for the London Underground, as well as others for the LNER and Indian State railways. In his work for the Underground, he would make graphic suggestions as to how riders could spend their discretionary time. Here, he encourages them to “View the Violinist’s Ecstasies” with a solidly enchanting musician plying his classical trade with a smile firmly plastered to his visage.

Description: Artist: ADOLPHE CRESPIN (1859-1944) Size: 15 3/4 x 21 3/8 in./40 x 54.3 cm Ad. Mertens, Bruxelles Considered one of the best Belgian architects specializing in Art Nouveau, Paul Hankar often collaborated with Crespin, who was a master of interior design. This poster, like their partnership, is a perfect balance of their two styles. “The poster ‘Hankar’ is in every way perfect. The principal subject, positioned just right, is interpreted in a very modern style. There are many details, but they are chosen with such pleasure and arranged with such taste, such discretion–in a single word, such tact–that far from removing importance from the principal subject he lends it more value, creating a particular atmosphere, technical if I may say so. The warm and vivid coloring further adds, if that’s possible, to the merit of this print which remains one of the best–if not the very best–of Crespin” (Beaumont, p. 48).

Description: Artist: DAVID DELLEPIANE (1866-1932) Size: 62 x 43 3/4 in./157.5 x 111.1 cm Imp. Moullot, Marseille “During the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution fundamentally changed the appearance of the world due to a number of major scientific breakthroughs . . . A series of revolutionary discoveries enabled electricity to be generated, harnessed and sold . . . Innovations were sold to the steadily growing crowds visiting the pavilions at world exhibitions and electricity trade fairs. Public response to the Electricity Fairy and her vision of the future was overwhelming. The dazzling allegorical figure, giving a human face to a physical phenomenon which by its very nature cannot be depicted, conveyed intimations of luxury and festive extravagance in ever greater measure . . . The advent of electric power and lighting coincided with the triumphant arrival of the art poster. It comes as no surprise, then, that progressive entrepreneurs frequently used this modern medium to win over public opinion . . . The Electrical Fairy’s theatrical pose and the hypnotic lighting effects high above the Marseilles exhibition ground give this poster by David Dellepiane . . . strong dramatic expressiveness. The effects of the light on the Fairy’s green body and the trailing clouds and plumes of smoke against the red sky are extremely subtle” (European Electricity, p. 17).

Unfortunately, this was also the day Hitler chose to invade Poland, pushing the inaugural Cannes film festival to 1946, at which point it was announced through a poster by Paul Colin. This is the larger format version of this image.

Description: Artist: JOSEF FENNEKER (1895-1956) Size: 10 3/8 x 14 1/4 in./26.3 x 36.2 cm Published from 1845 to 1944, Fliegende Blätter was a richly illustrated German humor magazine. Here, Fenneker stepped outside of his usual Expressionistic horror style and gave the publication a lovely Deco design. The caption published below it at the time read: “I thought the whole car would smell like roses; but the roses now smell like gasoline.” This of course refers to the fact that many owners of luxury cars tried in vain to mask the odor of petrol in their cars.

Yvette Guilbert.

Description: Artist: HENRY CLAUDIUS FORESTIER (1875-1922) Size: 27 1/2 x 40 1/2 in./70 x 103 cm J. Minot, Paris Primarily known for his woodcuts, Forestier produced illustrations for various publications. His stately vision of Guilbert is an excellent example of his output – a clearly-defined central subject placed into idyllic surroundings, the result of which produces a near-storybook culmination. Somber and elegant, she provides a study in contrasts: mature, yet ageless, blithe, yet somehow contemplative.

Condition Report: B+/ Slight tears in bottom text area.

Lithographies Originales. 1896

Lot 350: Lithographies Originales. 1896

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: GEORGES DE FEURE (1868-1943) Size: 17 5/8 x 23 7/8 in./45 x 60.6 cm Imp. Lemercier, Paris "To advertise Lithographies Originales, de Feure created a highly decorative poster in subtle pastel tones. Note, for example, how the yellows are made much more lustrous and vivid by being contrasted with nothing but grays; there being no other colors present, the effect is one of restraint and gentility, a mark of patrician good taste. Obviously, only the culturally elite would appreciate this publication, and the lady with the appraising look is a fair specimen of the clientele it seeks. The proof she is holding has come fresh of the lithographic stone, seen lower right” (Wine Spectator, 88). This version promotes Album No. 1.

Condition Report: B/ Slight tears at edges; slight stains.
