Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: SERGE GLADKY (1880-1930) Size: 22 x 31 in./56 x 78.7 cm Jean Borlin, the Swedish dancer and choreographer, who would go on to found and present the instantly-successful Swedish Ballet in Paris during the 1920 season of the Théâtre de Champs-Elysées, was something of a multi-disciplinarian, determined "to enlarge the field of ballet, and re-invigorate it, by bending to its service the newest tendencies in art, music, and literature, yet never allowing any of these elements to dominate the dance . . . Experiment succeeded experiment, each bolder than the last. . . . In after years, it is sometimes difficult to understand the clamour excited by certain productions, so often is the sensation of to-day the commonplace of to-morrow. But the pioneers are sacrificed on the altar of progress, and Borlin suffered from being in advance of his time. . . . [He] disbanded the ‘Ballets Suédois’ [in 1925], . . . but continued to give dance recitals both in France and abroad” (Complete Book of Ballets, by Cyril W. Beaumont, pp. 669 & 670). How appropriate that Gladky’s Modernist construct should immortalize one of the dancer’s final appearances, in an undocumented piece that facilely sums up Borlin’s unifying muse: "Eternal Circle.” This version omits the theater, ballets and other details, including the fact that decor for Borlin’s ballets were provided by Paul Colin, Gladky, F. Léger and Picabia. This is the smaller format version of the poster.

Description: Artist: EUGENE GRASSET (1841-1917) Size: 29 5/8 x 47 in./75.4 x 119.1 cm Imp. Draeger & Lesieur, Paris This bold design was commissioned for the opening of Sarah Bernhardt’s appearance in the play at the Theatre de la Porte-St. Martin on January 3, 1894. Bernhardt “was acutely aware of the differences between reality and illusion, and between dull recitation and powerful theater: “ . . . I . . . came to the realization that legend always triumphs over historical fact . . .’ The distinction that Bernhardt draws between truth (or history) and reality . . . is the distinction . . . between the uninspiring and the exemplary: ‘We do not want Joan of Arc to be a crude strapping peasant woman. . . . In legend she remains a frail being, led by a divine spirit. Her girl’s arm, holding up the heavy standard, is supported by an invisible angel. The beyond is reflected in her child’s eyes from which the warriors draw their strength and courage. It is thus that we wish her to be. And the legend remains triumphant’ . . . She has an especially otherworldly gaze in Eugène Grasset’s medievalizing poster for the production . . . After seeing Bernhardt as Joan of Arc, the novelist Anatole France . . . commented on [her] special capacity to embody myth: ‘She is at the same time a vision of an ideal life and an exquisite archaism: she is the legend animated’” (Bernhardt/Drama, p. 76).

Description: Artist: EUGENE GRASSET (1841-1917) Size: 29 7/8 x 46 1/2 in./75.8 x 118.2 cm Imp. Draeger & Lesieur, Paris Commissioned for the opening of Bernhardt’s appearance as Joan of Arc, the actress was not happy with the original design (see previous lot). She request that it be printed again, but this time with straight hair and a more other-worldly expression to properly evoke the spirit of the historic figure -- a frail, yet brave, woman led by God. This poster is the result of those alterations, the original being printed later and sold through G. de Malherbe as an art poster.

Description: Artist: EUGENE GRASSET (1841-1917) Size: 29 3/4 x 77 in./75.6 x 195.6 cm G. de Malherbe, Paris Accused in newspapers by the dancer Mata Hari of copying her heavily-researched temple dances from the Orient, Suzy Deguez was a popular, sensuous dancer in the early 1900s. She was one of the first Folies dancers to abandon the flesh-toned bodysuit, opting to actually go as nude as this poster would imply when on stage. Here we see elements of Mucha in the lavish two-sheet design -- a wonderful example of French Art Nouveau.

Description: Artist: EUGENE GRASSET (1841-1917) Size: 42 1/2 x 59 1/2 in./108 x 151.2 cm Imp. Lemercier, Paris One of at least three known variants of this wildly complex design for the 1893 International Exposition in Madrid, presenting a visual avalanche of patterns and textures. Just as her inky black hair bleeds into the foreboding clouds behind her, the deep folds of her goldenrod dress echo the fluted columns of the nearby building. Perhaps the most curious aspect of the poster is the odd angle Grasset chose -- we are presumably below her, and yet, as she is up on a ledge, the vast expanse of the grounds behind her appear to us at eye-level. This is the French-language version of the poster.

Cellot, Paris “For the proper young woman of the Belle Epoque, theater-going–as well as virtually all other social and recreational activities–invariably involved a chaperone. In Grasset’s design, this is expressed most eloquently: the young woman wistfully scanning the audience, the older one sternly watching” (Gold, p. 106). The poster attracted so much favorable comment at the time that the printing firm later used it to advertise its own services, replacing the theatrical program with promotional copy. Rare proof before the addition of letters.

This gentle and delightful work is singled out by Maindron for special praise, as one of the four best posters of the period . . . Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: VINCENT GUERRA Size: 24 1/2 x 39 1/4 in./62 x 101 cm Alépée, Paris Once World War II was over, Air France could capitalize on the African routes it had acquired in its merger with Air Afrique in 1940. Guerra plays up the exotic destination with a handsome wood-grain design. This is the rare English-language version of the poster, one that utilizes a smaller-eared Asian elephant, as opposed to the African elephant Guerra’s used in a later version of the poster (see PAI-XXVII, 80). Though an unquestionably exceptional vision, “this does not necessarily mean that the poster artist knew African fauna in detail. Guetta made a beautiful poster in ochre tones in 1946 . . . illustrating three elephants on a background of coconut trees with a plane overhead . . . Unfortunately, he had used photographs of Asian elephants for his documentation and their morphology is distinctly different from that of African elephants, and notably the ears, which are shorter. In all likelihood alerted by connoisseurs, he corrected the poster two years later, giving the African pachyderms earlobes worthy of their breed” (Air France/Dream, p. 130).

As with dancing, it was common – and perfectly acceptable – for two women to skate together at the same time” (Gold, p. 86). Description: Artist: DUDLEY HARDY (1867-1922) Size: 15 1/8 x 23 1/8 in./38.5 x 58.7 cm Waterlow & Sons, London A simple British musical comedy, A Gaiety Girl ran for over 400 London performances before landing a Broadway debut, followed immediately by a complete world tour. Such popularity resulted in over a dozen parodies and imitations being produced in the following years. The plot is nothing remarkable, circling around a stolen comb and romantic obstacles. The actual draw came from the Gaiety Girls themselves -- a troupe of vivacious female dancers all dolled up in the latest fashions, traipsing about the stage as often as possible.

Condition Report: B-/ Restored tears, largely at edges.

Description: Artist: ADOLFO HOHENSTEIN (1854-1928) Size: 39 1/2 x 87 3/8 in./100.2 x 222 cm G. Ricordi, Milano Two young women with symbols of manual labor (a shuttle and a washboard) place a wreath around the cameo of Alessandro Volta to indicate their gratefulness for the electricity that liberated them from menial tasks. The poster is for an exhibition of electrical products being held in honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Volta, the inventor of an instrument for measuring electricity (voltmeter), and the man who defined a single unit of it, a volt, as "the electron drive force which, when applied to the conductor with the resistance of one ohm, produces a current of one ampere.” That so impressed Napoleon that he made him a count as well as a senator of Lombardy. This is the larger, 3-sheet format.

Ricordi, Milan As Monte Carlo never permitted gambling to be a primary feature of its tourism advertising, artists were forced to focus on the area’s other amusements. Here, in the dusty rose glow of sunset, a mustachioed gentleman brings dignity and sure masculinity to the sport of pigeon shooting. To the contemporary eye, the palette and pose have a Wild West tinge, bringing up thoughts of adventure.
