Neubert a Synoré, Praha Although the best known artistic response to the bombing of Guernica is by Picasso, Kokoschka’s interpretation here pulls no punches in expressing the raw brutality of Spain’s fascist government against innocent civilians. Description: Artist: JOSEPH C. LEYENDECKER (1874-1951) Size: 11 3/8 x 15 1/2 in./29 x 39.3 cm Leyendecker created over a dozen designs for Kuppenheimer, an American men’s clothier founded in 1876. All of his illustrations for the company are the epitome of elegance and refinement, this image being no exception. Despite the wintry weather, this couple gazes confidently out at the viewer, almost judging you for not wearing an ensemble as effortlessly classy as theirs. Obsessed with perfection, Leyendecker would create more than one finished painting for each idea, hence why another maquette for this winter Kuppenheimer ad exists in a size variant with a few minor stylistic alterations.

Description: Artist: BERTOLD LÖFFLER (1874-1960) Size: 32 1/8 x 39 1/2 in./81.6 x 100.4 cm Friedr Sperl, Wien The early portion of the Nineteenth Century was an historically rough patch for Austrians. With the collapse of the Austrian Empire, a reorganization of the government became inevitable, and in 1867 a compromise with Hungarian moderate nationalists established a dual state: the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. But the realm, a land of diverse peoples ruled by a German-Magyar minority, increasingly became an anachronism in a nationalistic age. As a response to ever-growing ethnic conflicts, a celebration of unity was declared in order to at least ease these increasing nationalistic tensions. This is one of many designs Löffler created for the day.

Description: Artist: PRIVAT LIVEMONT (1861-1936) Size: 32 1/8 x 42 3/4 in./81.5 x 108.6 cm J.L. Goffart, Bruxelles One of the most iconic posters of all time, Livemont’s design for Absinthe Robette perfectly captures the spirit of Art Nouveau. Every element of the image is lavishly decorative yet delicately organic. Holding up her glass with the reverence of a holy relic, we do not see the hand which pours the water over the sugar, adding a mystical, other-worldly quality to the concoction. The background is made up of sensual plumes of mint on green, echoing the milky swirl within the cup. There is also an obvious nod to Mucha in the execution of the woman’s hair, as well as the cut-out halo encircling her head.

Description: Artist: PRIVAT LIVEMONT (1861-1936) Size: 31 1/4 x 42 in./79.2 x 106.7 cm J. L. Goffart, Bruxelles This is one of the several highly melodramatic designs that Livemont prepared for novels appearing in the pages of the daily newspaper, La Reforme. Weill refers to them as “grand-Guignol pictures which are really high camp” (pp. 59-60) and indeed a few of them are on the seamier side (see PAI-XLII, 350 & PAI-XI, 279). This one, however, produced to publicize a "great dramatic novel" titled A Mother's Pride, seems to merge Livemont’s two styles, containing the aforementioned melodrama while also showcasing some glorious aspects of Art Nouveau design.

Van Leer, Amsterdam One of Livemont’s most gorgeous designs, this Art Nouveau goddess-next-door is about to indulge in her first sip of Van Houten hot chocolate. Description: Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 34 5/8 x 49 1/8 in./88 x 124.7 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris One of at least two designs Chéret created for Loie Fuller (see two prior lots), here he idyllically captures her exceptionally Modern dance routine on paper. In her act, she would wave reams of diaphanous fabric around her body, dozens of colored lights flashing upon her as she moved. She was considered the perfect blend of human and machine, so much so that many art historians mark the beginning of the Modern period by her first performance.

Description: Artist: DANIEL DE LOSQUES (David Thoroude, 1880-1915) Size: 20 1/4 x 14 1/8 in./51.3 x 45.8 cm De Losques was the pseudonym of David Thoroude, who studied law and started out as a legal clerk before switching to art. In addition to the many theatrical posters he created, he left behind a large body of magazine illustrations and caricatures executed during a ten-year period between 1904 and 1914. His career was cut short by his death in aerial combat during World War I. This exploration of his work – which translates to “Corridors & Wings” and focuses on the theatrical scene to which the artist was magnetically drawn – with an excellent introduction by Francis de Croisset, contains a total of twenty-four loose plates: twenty-two single-page and two double-page spreads. Some of the personalities set down in these wonderful caricatures include Marguerite Deval and George Feydeau, who are shown here.

In spite of the project’s initial guidelines demanded by the [event’s] jury, which rendered the composition heavier and less graceful, this poster nevertheless remains one of the successes of this first Parisian period” (Loupot/Zagrodzki, p. 65). Description: Artist: SASCHA MAURER (1897-1961) Size: 14 x 22 in./35.5 x 56 cm Latham Litho., Long Island City “Maurer was nearly unique among American artists in following the dictates of modern design. A German immigrant who arrived in New York City in 1925, Maurer . . . soon made himself one of the most influential voices in the campaign to improve poster design and broaden the medium’s acceptance. . . . Maurer decried the American penchant for ‘using monstrously enlarged paintings on posters’ and questioned Americans’ attachment to realistic illustration, which he disparaged as ‘rudimentary naturalism’” (Travel by Train, p. 103).

Description: Artist: LEONETTO CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Size: 59 1/2 x 80 1/4 in./151 x 204 cm G. Ricordi, Milano One of the main selling points of the Mele department store was that the average woman could obtain high-fashion style for a relatively low dollar figure. Coined “bourgeois realism,” posters like this two-sheet design by Cappiello showcase attainable glamour and elegance without making it seem pedestrian or cheap. Here in particular, Cappiello captures that moment of pure self-satisfaction as a woman finds the perfect dress to make her stand out in a crowd.

While his dapper choice of clothing is certainly front and center, because of his appreciative glance across the Piazza del Plebiscito, our eyes are also drawn toward her elegant ensemble. A distinguished, sophisticated image.

Description: Artist: ENRICO SACCHETTI (1877-1969) Size: 58 3/4 x 81 3/8 in./149.2 x 206.7 cm G. Ricordi, Milano Sacchetti only designed two poster for the Mele department store, this being the only one to feature a gentleman. His early career as a cartoonist is evident in the exaggerated, almost humorous poses of his figures -- a fine balancing act between posh and ridiculous. “Here . . . he turns to a charming dandy; captured in all his [2-sheet] vanity – neck and head stretched forward, eyes closed–as he shows off his fine, elegant suit, while a typically smiling black valet . . . presents him an alternate suit he has just taken from an enormous suitcase” (Mele, p. 237).
