Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 59 1/4 x 77 1/2 in./150.5 x 197 cm Weiners, Acton/London Rudge-Whitworth was born out of the merger of the two eponymous companies in 1894. While it would go on to specialize in motorcycles by 1911, the turn-of-the-century was its Golden Era for bicycles. This two-sheet poster is possibly the most lovely of all those produced for the company, with a delicate English lady riding happily through the countryside in order to promote “Britain’s Best Bicycle.”

Condition Report: B-/ Tears & stains, primarily at folds & edges; lined in two parts.

Swift Cycles. 1898

Lot 54: Swift Cycles. 1898

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: TOM BROWNE (1872-1910) Size: 59 x 116 in./150 x 294.6 cm J.T. Grover, Nottingham Although repeatedly mentioned in texts on the subject, this three-sheet design by Browne for Swift Cycles is never reproduced, making it -- until now -- a bit of a mystery. As noted in the October, 1899, issue of The Poster: “Cycling designs have attracted Mr. Browne, and some of his finest work in this line has already appeared in this magazine, namely, The Swift Cycle poster.” Here, he plays up “his power in depicting rollicking fun, and he is master of a long series of humorous types of faces that serve him excellently in this direction” (Rogers, p. 42) within this very design -- the prissy prior, lecherous codger, and wide-eyed young beauty.

Description: Artist: EUGÈNE GRASSET (1841-1917) Size: 58 7/8 x 42 3/8 in./149.6 x 107.6 cm Imp. de Vaugirard/G. de Malherbe, Paris Here, in one of the most appealing of Grasset’s posters, atmosphere is paramount. “Of the product, we see barely a handlebar: it is the moody and enigmatic rider who carries the weight of the sale. The twilight effect adds warmth to the image in which type and design are beautifully integrated. Georges Richard was one of quite a number of bicycle manufacturers who were hurriedly adding automobiles as a sideline around the turn of the century; within a few years, the sideline would become the main, or as here, the only product of the company” (Gold, p. 56). This is the most vividly-colored example of this poster we have ever encountered.

Delanchy, Paris A visibly perturbed police officer has just burst through a crowd, demanding to know what the hullabaloo is all about, only to be told “Officer, we’re admiring the marvelous Kosmos tires.” One of Oury’s many cartoonish posters for the bicycle industry, all of which combine a dash of humor with sophisticated imagery.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 35 1/4 x 49 in./89.5 x 124.4 cm Ch. Lévy, Paris Emilienne d'Alencon was one of the desirable women of the French Belle Epoque stage who came to be known as the Grand Trois – a trio of famous courtesans that included Liane de Pougy (see Lot 124) and La Belle Otero (see Lot XXX). Though she studied acting at the Conservatoire for a brief period of time, she became a sensation for an act that she developed at the Cirque d'Eté that she later reprised at the Folies-Bergère to great acclaim, which essentially amounted to a languid ballet performed in an entirely pink ensemble in the company of a warren of pink-dyed rabbits. Here, however, for an appearance in the Théâtre des Menus-Plaisirs, she appears to be trying her hand at a Loie Fuller-esque routine.

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 35 1/2 x 25 3/4 in./89.6 x 65.2 cm Ch. Lévy, Paris Known as the “Electrician of Budapest,” Edwin Rousby toured Europe throughout the mid-1890s with a variety of curious devices, the most notable of which was Robert Paul’s Theatrograph. Rousby’s enthusiastic, wild performances ultimately led to this product being the second most widely used motion picture machine in the world after the Lumière Cinématographe. This poster goes well above and beyond anything Rousby could actually have presented -- fire-shooting turrets, electrified harp & lyre, complete battle reenactments, a glowing red-eyed monkey & clown, a projector-wielding bear, an electrical-pole conveyor belt of instruments and lights, all hooked up to modified pipe organ.

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 24 1/8 x 31 3/8 in./61.2 x 79.6 cm Ch. Lévy, Paris Dressed in a snakeskin-pattered bodysuit, Charles Esko performed various contortions alongside his very own personal Indian. What one had to do with the other, no one knows; however, Native Americans were of particular fascination in Europe given the popularity of traveling Wild West shows, such as those put on by Buffalo Bill. Many performers would capitalize on this novelty by just tossing an Indian in whenever they could.

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 34 5/8 x 48 in./87.9 x 122 cm Ch. Lévy, Paris Touring most of the Western World throughout the 1890s, Rodo Leo Rapoli offered a new type of balancing act to various traveling circuses and performance troupes: he would climb up an unsupported ladder without using his hands, show off a few acrobatic tricks at the top, and climb back down. Newspapers at the time applauded his abilities, calling the act ‘unique.’ Here, a French poster for his American tour depicts him as a sailor on the half shell -- a patriotic nautical routine for his US audience.

Description: Artist: CHARLES LÉVY Size: 34 x 48 5/8 in./86.3 x 123.5 cm Ch. Lévy, Paris Founded in 1855, the small garden pavilion café-concert on the Champs-Elysées called L’Horloge ran into hard times in the 1870s, and in 1875 it was taken over by the city of Paris. Later that year, it was purchased from the government by a Viennese businessman who was looking to place his disabled daughter in just such a tranquil setting. He kept the garden atmosphere and hired a stable of some of the period’s top personalities to perform. Not only did L’Horloge book the finest entertainers of the day, but it was the only establishment of its kind on the Champs-Elysées to provide a summer rain cover so that the music could continue regardless of the weather. Shown are a cavalcade of Horloge stars in this general promotion for the establishment, placing a name-tag of sorts somewhere on each performer just in case the passerby doesn’t instantly recognize them.

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 40 3/8 x 80 1/2 in./105.2 x 209.4 cm Calhoun Print, Hartford An extremely rare and impressive 3-sheet woodblock engraving based on the Henry Atwell Thomas portrait of Buffalo Bill. “Quite a few . . . posters feature Cody as their principal graphic element . . . First . . . [it] was he who made the show; it was he who had actually lived the life unfolding before the Wild West spectators . . . It was not just that he dramatized the West; his presence made it real, vital and thrilling . . . Secondly, some of the finest design and lithography for Buffalo Bill’s Wild West can be detected in these posters . . . Looking at these portraits . . . one cannot help but sense a deeper feeling of respect on the part of the lithographer for his model, Colonel Cody . . . a serious and determined showman; their job was to project and reinforce the image of Cody as the fearless and experienced guide, scout, frontiersman and Indian fighter – with rare exception, they did it brilliantly” (Buffalo Bill, p. 6). Calhoun “did singularly splendid posters for Buffalo Bill but it was not, in fact, a lithographer, its plant being devoted entirely to steel and wood engraving. Calhoun produced the very first Buffalo Bill poster and printed many of the very early Wild West programs . . . The firm was headed by a close friend of Cody, William H. Higgs . . . Wood engraving, one of the oldest methods of graphic art reproduction reached its commercial and artistic zenith in the United States in the 1880s and 1890s when Americans were recognized as the world’s greatest wood engravers” (p. 4). Note that “C. Etherington” is given credit for engraving the Thomas image.

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 36 3/4 x 50 7/8 in./93.3 x 129.3 cm Imp. J. Barreau, Paris In 1899, an immense Ferris Wheel was constructed on the Avenue de Suffren in Paris. Towering over the city at a remarkable 350 feet, it was often compared to the Eiffel Tower -- both being presumed blights, too audacious for its surrounding classical architecture. Each of the wheel’s 40 carriages could carry approximately 40 people at a time, putting around 1,600 citizens on the ride at any given moment. Yet, in spite of that obvious mass, this poster makes it appear an airy, mythological contraption held up by a set of seminude nymphs. This is the larger format version of the poster.

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 30 1/8 x 49 3/4 in./76.5 x 126.4 cm Roeloffzen-Hübneren Van Santen, Amsterdam Although Rembrandt’s work remained greatly underappreciated after his death in 1669, scholars of the late nineteenth century began to view him as an obscure and isolated genius -- an opinion which, generally speaking, continues today. By the mid-1890s, dozens of exhibitions of his work peppered the globe, with collectors snapping up whatever they could by him at exceptional prices. To celebrate the coronation of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam hosted a show of over 124 of the master’s paintings, creating one of the first ‘blockbuster’ art shows of the Modern era. This was the exhibition which inspired Henry Clay Frick to make his most notable and expensive purchase to date -- The Portrait of a Young Artist -- which launched the Old Master portion of the now-famous Frick Collection. This is the French-language version of the exhibition poster.
