Le Grillon. 1899

Lot 662: Le Grillon. 1899

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: JACQUES VILLON (1875-1963) Size: tctctctc This magnificent and rare work is a poster classic by any standard, perfectly composed and drawn with a light touch of humor. Note the delightful beer-guzzling cricket (“le grillon”) at the lower right, the better to impress the name of the place in our minds. Le Grillon was a cabaret in the Latin Quarter. In fact, at a time when all other cabarets were moving to Montmartre, this was one of the last hold-outs. All the important chansonniers appeared there, including Delmet, Montoya, Le Gay, and shown in the background of this poster, the well-known singer Dominique Bonnaud. And in the foreground it is the poet J.M. Levet executed in the manner of an English dandy, sitting stage front on the bar stool, who steals the show. He is at once worldly and other-worldly, real and caricature. But ever so imposing and ever so interesting. He would obviously be the center of attraction at any bar. The lettering is also well-integrated in this three-color poster. “Jacques Villon’s poster for Le Grillon would assure him a spot in any history of the graphic arts, even if he were not otherwise a powerful figure in the history of modern painting” (Word & Image, p. 19).

Les Maitres de l'Affiche. 1896-1900

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: BOOKS AND PERIODICALS Size: Each: 12 x 15 3/4 in./30.5 x 40 cm Published by Libraire Chaix, Paris The first three years of Maitres’ publication in two bound volumes, with Plates 1-144. This series of original lithographic reproductions of posters–four plates were mailed to subscribers each month for five years, with sixteen supplements–crowned the affichomanie at the end of the 19th century. Alain Weill makes two interesting observations about this series. Its appeal, in part, was due to its manageable size: “At the time posters posed a problem which, moreover, has still not been solved: how to keep and enjoy a collection consisting of very large prints which one has to preserve rolled or flat in some cabinet . . . [This book] provided a reduction of the most valued and consequently the most widely known posters, thus enabling collectors and other interested people to examine quickly and easily the main works of the current advertising production.” Weill notes that one month’s offerings (4 prints) could be had at the same price as an original poster by Lautrec, Mucha or the other greats of the poster pantheon: “This is not at all surprising since the posters were printed in great quantities on ordinary paper and, to boot, the one-time art and plate costs were assumed by the company whose product it advertised; the dealers paid printers only for the overrun they wished to acquire. Hence, we must consider it normal that Les Maitres de l’Affiche, specially produced by means of lithography on quality paper, was offered for sale at the price of an original poster. The people did not perceive these two types of products as being in competition. They were infatuated with small prints and with this kind of compilation” (Maitres, Images Graphique edition, pp. 4 & 5).

Condition Report: Overall excellent condition with slight foxing at edges of some plates.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: BOOKS AND PERIODICALS Size: 9 3/4 x 12 3/4 in./25.7 x 32.4 cm Published by the Librairie Nilsson-Per Lamm, Paris “I often ask myself what they, the curious of the year 2000, will think of us, whom we are cut off from by a century of dreadful events; them, knowing that which we don’t yet know and that we nearly suspect, what will they say of our old frivolity with all that has passed? Won’t they pity us, like we today have pity for the aristocratic society whose ancient prints we refer to with carelessness and levity?” Thus mused Pierre Veber in his prefacing comments for the Programmes Illustrés, a hardcover compendium presenting reproductions of some of the most beautiful menus, invitations, business cards and announcements of the Belle Epoque. Little could he have known how off the mark his thoughts were, as today we look back at the technical virtuosity these posterists displayed with the limited technology of the time. Along with forty pages of introductory text, the sixty plates–most in color–contained herein include works by the best-known artists of the day, including: Ibels, Misti, Grasset, Rochegrosse, Chéret, Willette, Roubille, De Feure, Toulouse-Lautrec, Casal, Choubrac, Guillaume and Roedel.

Condition Report: Excellent condition in later hardcover binding.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: BOOKS AND PERIODICALS Size: 13 3/4 x 18 in./34.8 x 45.7 cm Published by the Société d’Éditions littéraires et artistiques, Paris Hardcover book; in overall excellent condition with some slight foxing on some paper edges. Provenance: Personal library of Sarah Bernhardt, with her ex libris on inside cover. Includes Certificate of Authenticity. As compiled by French man-of-letters Henry Bataille, this publication with a deceptively clever title (essentially it can translate a number of ways, all of which allude to the keen intelligence and insight of the profiled assemblage) contains twenty-two portrait plates of famous French literary geniuses, including André Gid, Tristan Bernard, Gustave Kahn, Maurice Donnay, Catulle Mendès and Robert de Montesquiou. And though these great writers certainly deserve to be lauded, it’s the book’s history that makes it markedly interesting. First off, there’s the handwritten dedication by Bataille to Sarah Bernhardt – certainly no slouch in the intellect department herself–on the book’s title page, as well as Bernhardt’s ex libris on the inside cover. As if that weren’t interesting enough, the volume was subsequently purchased from Bernhardt’s personal library by Sacha Guitry–the legendary French film actor, director, screenwriter and playwright.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: BOOKS AND PERIODICALS Size: 9 1/4 x 12 1/2 in./23.5 x 31.8 cm Published by Cecil Palmer, London “The subject of the Poster is one no longer discussed exclusively by that section of the public interested in advertising. The limitations imposed by practical use have been outstripped, and the question now arises whether or not the Poster has aesthetic values” (p. ix). Thus begins McKnight Kauffer’s 190-page hardcover discourse on the artistic merit and historical evolution of the poster as a publicly engaging medium on a global level. Erudite introduction and commentary are overshadowed only by the over one-hundred color and black-and-white reproductions of pre-1925 graphic design from around the world, as well as their potential prior decorative influences.

Condition Report: Overall excellent condition with slight wear on cover.
