Description: Atkyns (Sir Robert). The Ancient and Present State of Glocestershire, 2nd ed., 1768, folding engraved map, eight engraved armorial plates, 64 folding engraved views (complete), one or two minor repairs and spots, t.e.g., 20th c. red full morocco, spine with raised band lettered and decorated in gilt, folio. A good copy in a fine binding. Upcott I, p. 250. Sir Robert Atkyns (1647-1711) came from a notable Gloucestershire family, he was knighted by Charles II in 1663, elected MP for Cirencester in 1680-81 and afterwards for the borough of Gloucester. The greater part of the first edition was destroyed in a warehouse fire on Jan 30th 1712-13 and amazingly a portion of the second edition met with a similar fate! (1)
