Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: [Belgium. Ghent]. "Libro en que se escriven los cofrades de el Glorioso Patriarcha San Machario 1639." Pen and ink on paper, (77)lvs. (partly blank), dated between 1639-1674, contemp. vellum w. leather ties, 31,5x20,5 cm. - Some lvs. cut out (probably blanks); first and last lvs. frayed/ sl. dam.; occas. sl. soiled; lacks endpapers. Vellum creased and soiled. = Interesting document concerning a religious fellowship around St. Macarius of Ghent. Macarius, according to legend a bishop from Antioch, visited Ghent in 1012. At that moment the city was troubled by an outbreak of the plague and Macarius received a vision that only the death of him and his companions could stop this disease. Shortly afterwards he fell ill and died in the St. Baafs Abbey in Ghent. Ever since, Macarius was called upon by people suffering from the plague. In 1540 Charles V ordered the partial demolishment of the St. Baafs Abbey, to make place for the so-called Spaniard's Castle, named after the Spanish regiment that manned it. However, the religious function of the abbey was never fully abandoned and around 1634 the cult of Macharius was revived. In 1634 a chapel dedicated to the Saint was installed in the Lavatorium (dating from ±1171). Also, the well on the property was connected to the Saint and popular belief attributed healing powers to the water coming from it. Apparently this revival was accompanied by the installation of a religious fellowship, of which the current document lists both male and female members, alphabetically ordered on surname (titled: "Siguente los cofrades Glorioso Sant Machario An[no] D[omini] 1639" and "Siguente las hermanas cofradas del glorioso S. Machario"). Among the principally Spanish names, there are people with important political and military functions, i.a. "Antonio de Gamarra" and "Alonso de Cepeda y Andrade". An annotation on the backcover testifies to the abolishment of the religious institution at the end of the 18th century, reading: "Spaensch niet bezonders 1790".

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED, to "Cher ami" [Hendrik Wiegersma], dated (in a diff. hand) "1931 Oct.", pen and ink, one fold. leaf, recto and verso. = Rather plaintive letter, in which the author is full of worries about his recovery from a car accident: "Je me suis fait écraser par une auto, une lourde voiture qui faisait du 60 k. à l'heure et qui m'a trainé 16 mètres sur la route." After this crash, Cingria's life is "convalescent, inquièt, surtout très pauvre", since his insurance wouldn't pay him more than "un petit somme." Therefore, he tries to sell the book that he included with this letter (not present): "L'éditeur n'en a tiré que 60 exemplaires et il m'en a donné quelques uns pour les vendre, ce qui je fait, aux prix les plus divers, puisque j'y suis obligé."

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Copes, R.O. (1610-1671). "Uijtgaeff op mijne reijse aende Con. van Vranckriech van wege haer Ho. Mo. (...) mede ene Journael vande reijse voors." Manuscript, pen and ink, on recto and verso, (2),(5 blank),(22),(38 blank),(6),(43 blank),(1)lvs., dated 11 March - 28 May 1660, contemp. vellum wallet binding with green silk tie, 15,5x11,5 cm. - First quire loosening; vellum trifle dustsoiled. In very fine condition. = Remarkable diary, kept by Rabo Otto Copes, raadpensionaris in Den Bosch, on a journey to the French court on behalf of the Staten Generaal. The cause of this diplomatic mission was a conflict regarding the principality of Orange. Ever since the death of Willem II in 1650, the regents of Willem III, Mary Stuart and Amalia van Solms, quarreled over the power of this principality. To the dissatisfaction of Mary Stuart, the administration was in hands of Frederik van Dohna, a supporter of Amalia of Solms. In order to extend her influence she asked the French King for help. He however used the situation to his own advantage and annexed Orange in 1660. Concerned with the situation the Staten Generaal sent Copes on a mission to France, carrying several letters, i.a. statements of both regents that they had come to a agreement. After receiving instructions from the Staten Generaal, Copes leaves The Hague on 14 March, heading for Breda. Here he speaks with Amalia van Solms, who hands him several letters. He then travels to Brussels, continuing to Paris a few days later, accompanied by i.a. Lord Jermyn and Walter Montagu. In Paris he speaks i.a. with Mary Stuart in the Palais Royal. He continues to Montpellier where he speaks with Cardinal Mazarin and, several days later, with the French King in Toulouse: "Aldaer den 21. He continues his journey via i.a. Bajonne, St. Jean de Luz, Toulouse and Bordeaux, reaching Paris again on 10 May and Antwerp on the 28th. The diary is not only of great historical importance but also gives a lively account of several trips Copes made, visiting i.a. the Notre Dame, the Louvre, Fontainebleu and the rich posessions of Cardinal Mazarin: "des namiddags hebbe ick wesen sien het huijs vande Here Cardinal Masarini sijnde uijttermaete costelijck van binnen hier met schilderien van oude ende leste ook moderne meesters niet schoone ende rare ende van groote prijse (...) ick hebbene er gelijc die loff vande coninge genaemt de Tuilleries." and: "'den 24. hebbe ick gesien de Bibliotheque vande heer Cardinal Masarini, doch sijne niet soo groot als well voorheen is geweest ende meest cleine boucken quaelijck gebonden." Interesting is also the second part of the notebook, containing an extensive account of the expenses made during the journey, i.a. for "huijs vande Cardinal Masarini te sien", "port van brieven ende pacquetten", "stoff tot de reijsmantel", "2 paar pistolen holsters ende cruijdt". Naturally, much of the costs are concerned with transportation, i.a. "van Chalon sur Seine een Barque gehuijrt tot Lions", "met 3 paerden ende eenen guide geweest sien Bois de Vincennes, Vaux Fontainebellau, Essonne" and "voor den carosse om bij de Coniginne te gane ende mij voors. hier andere tot mijne affairen te brengen". As far as we have been able to establish, this important diary is unknown. Its rich details provide new insights into this important diplomatic conflict (especially when compared to the rather dull and much shorter description of this mission by Lieuwe van Aitzema in Saken van Staet en Oorlogh, The Hague, 1669, vol. 4, p.629ff).
