Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: The Naval War of 1812 or the History of the United States Navy during the Last War with Great BritainAuthor: Theodore Roosevelt - Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was the 26th President of the United States (1901-1909). He is noted for his exuberant personality, range of interests and achievements, and his leadership of the Progressive Movement, as well as his "cowboy" persona and robust masculinity. He was a leader of the Republican Party and founder of the short-lived Progressive ("Bull Moose") Party of 1912. Before becoming President, he held offices at the city, state, and federal levels. Roosevelt's achievements as a naturalist, explorer, hunter, author, and soldier are as much a part of his fame as any office he held as a politician.Publisher: G. P. Putnam's SonsCity: New YorkYear: 1882Printing Information: First EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: xviii/498 pages plus 2 pages of publisher's advertisementsWidth: 6.25" Height: 8.75"Book Details: While at Harvard, Roosevelt began a systematic study of the role played by the nascent US Navy in the War of 1812, largely completing two chapters of a book he would publish after graduation. Helped in part by his two uncles, he did his own research using original source materials and official US Navy records. Roosevelt's carefully researched book was comparable to modern doctoral dissertations, complete with drawings of individual and combined ship maneuvers, charts depicting the differences in iron throw weights of cannon shot between American and British forces, and analyses of the differences between British and American leadership down to the ship-to-ship level. Published after Roosevelt's graduation from college, "The Naval War of 1812" was praised for its scholarship and style. This book established Roosevelt's reputation as a serious historian. One modern naval historian wrote: "Roosevelt's study of the War of 1812 influenced all subsequent scholarship on the naval aspects of the War of 1812 and continues to be reprinted. More than a classic, it remains, after 120 years, a standard study of the war."Condition / Notes: Antique volume is bound in orange cloth, with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial design to front cover depicting sailing vessel. Description: Title: Benjamin Franklin: His Autobiography; with a Narrative of His Public Life and ServicesAuthor: Benjamin Franklin - Dr. Benjamin Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. A noted polymath, Franklin was a leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, musician, inventor, satirist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. As a scientist, he was a major figure in the American Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer, and the glass 'armonica'. He formed both the first public lending library in America and the first fire department in Pennsylvania.Franklin earned the title of "The First American" for his early and indefatigable campaigning for colonial unity; as an author and spokesman in London for several colonies, then as the first United States Ambassador to France, he exemplified the emerging American nation. Franklin was foundational in defining the American ethos as a marriage of the practical and democratic values of thrift, hard work, education, community spirit, self-governing institutions, and opposition to authoritarianism both political and religious, with the scientific and tolerant values of the Enlightenment. In the words of historian Henry Steele Commager, "In a Franklin could be merged the virtues of Puritanism without its defects, the illumination of the Enlightenment without its heat." To Walter Isaacson, this makes Franklin "the most accomplished American of his age and the most influential in inventing the type of society America would become.", H. V. , during the Term of Two Years in the Service of the United States; Statistics of the Enlistments, Elections, Promotions, Sick, Discharged, Killed and Wounded, and All Valuable Information connected with the RegimentAuthor: Pound SterlingPublisher: Davies & Kent, PrintersCity: New YorkYear: 1863Binding Style: HardcoverPagination: 196 pagesWidth: 5" Height: 7.75"Book Details: "That is always most dear to us in which we have acted a part or borne a hand. So the incidents of our camp - the picket - the excitement and suffering of the march - the stories around the camp fires - the wild excitement of the battle-field - have a deep, stirring interest to us who have acted our part in the drama; who have stood shoulder to shoulder through all their terrors, in victory and defeat, in hope or fear. No outsider can tell us of our own peculiar interest in them - none can feel for us the joy or sorrow, the dejection or exultation, as unitedly we have toiled and fought against the enemy. It is with this conviction that your companion-in-arms has heaped together these familiar incidents, that when we have laid aside the musket and "harness of war" -stripped off the blue - donned the citizen - returned to our peaceful homes, and joyfully, thankfully joined the circle of loved ones around the old hearth-stone, we can bring up the past years of absence and peril, and make the present brighter and happier. To the Twenty-third Regiment, then, this little book is affectionately dedicated." Description: Title: Le vaisseau de 74 canons: traite pratique d'art naval - Jean BoudriotAuthor: Jean BoudriotPublisher: Editions des 4 SeigneursCity: GrenobleYear: 1973-1977Printing Information: Limited EditionBinding Style: HardcoverNumber of Volumes: 4 Complete: YesWidth: 10" Height: 12.75"Book Details: This French-language title appears within the "Collection Archeologie Navale Francaise."The author, Jean Boudriot, is the world's leading authority on French warships of the sailing era and this work has been written to the highest standards of historical accuracy and research, benefiting from Boudriot's remarkable skill as a draughtsman. The author presents a highly detailed examination of the French 74-gun ship of the 18th century, and a large number of differences emerge from its rival and counterpart built in English yards. The 74-gun ship-of-the-line represents the expression of the art of the naval architect and formed the backbone of the fleets in the latter part of the 18th century. Boudriot has based this work on the 74' of around 1780: the ships that fought in the American War of Independence and later in the French Revolutionary & Napoleonic Wars from 1793 to 1815 - vessels that would have been very familiar to English admirals from Rodney to Nelson. The first volume, Hull Construction, examines the administration of the ports and dockyards, the work of the surveyors, the work of the shipwrights, materials, dockyard installations, hull timbers, fastenings and caulking. It is illustrated with 16 folding plates and 106 drawings, plus tables and a vocabulary of terms used. The second volume, Fitting Out the Hull, covers hull fittings, internal arrangements, ballast and stowage and the warrant-officers' stores. This volume is illustrated with 26 plates (some folding and some in color), plus 107 drawings. The third volume, Masts - Sails - Rigging, deals with these three areas and their maintenance. Other features include general concepts, cost of building, a list of ships in the French Navy in 1780, and a vocabulary. The volume is illustrated with 13 plates (some folding, some in color) and 134 drawings. The final volume, Manning - Shiphandling, describes the officers and crew, their work, life on board, ship-handling, naval evolutions and operations, navigation, and colors and signals. It is illustrated with 17 plates (some folding, some in color) and 167 drawings. There are also tables, a general vocabulary and a useful bibliography. Condition / Notes: Volumes are bound in blue cloth, with stamped white lettering to spines and front covers. Books show light shelfwear. Bindings are tight. Interiors are clean and without markings.
