Booker T. Washington UP FROM SLAVERY: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY 1901 Author-Signed First Edition African-American Leader Author Educator

Lot 1201: Booker T. Washington UP FROM SLAVERY: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY 1901 Author-Signed First Edition African-American Leader Author Educator

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Up from Slavery: An AutobiographyAuthor: Booker T. Washington - Booker Taliaferro Washington was an African-American educator, author, orator, and advisor to Republican presidents. He was the dominant leader in the African-American community in the United States from 1890 to 1915. Representative of the last generation of black American leaders born in slavery, he spoke on behalf of the large majority of blacks who lived in the South but had lost their ability to vote through disfranchisement by southern legislatures. Historians note that Washington, "advised, networked, cut deals, made threats, pressured, punished enemies, rewarded friends, greased palms, manipulated the media, signed autographs, read minds with the skill of a master psychologist, strategized, raised money, always knew where the camera was pointing, traveled with an entourage, waved the flag with patriotic speeches, and claimed to have no interest in partisan politics. In other words, he was an artful politician." While his opponents called his powerful network of supporters the "Tuskegee Machine," Washington maintained control because of his ability to gain support of numerous groups including influential whites and the black business, educational and religious communities nationwide. He advised on financial donations from philanthropists, and avoided antagonizing white Southerners with his accommodation to the political realities of the age of Jim Crow segregation.Publisher: Doubleday, Page & Co.City: New YorkYear: 1901Printing Information: First EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: 330 pagesWidth: 5.75" Height: 8.25"Book Details: "This volume is the outgrowth of a series of articles, dealing with incidents in my life, which were published consecutively in the Outlook." This scrapbook, from the family estate of Henry J. Van Lennep, is filled with exquisite steel-cut engravings from the mid-19th century. Including are scenes from Crimean War and many pictures of foreign cities, particularly in the Baltic and Italy, as well sentimental and religious images.Henry J. Van Lennep (1815-1889) was a noted nineteenth century minister, missionary, writer, illustrator, and educator. Born in Smyrna, Van Lennep was educated in the U.S. but returned to Turkey upon ordination, where he served as missionary for 29 years. During this time, he traveled extensively throughout western Asia and Egypt, aided by his proficiency in many languages. A skillful artist, he wrote and illustrated several books based on his travels. Published during a time when public curiosity about "the Orient" was high, these books were very popular, showing the scenery, people, and customs of Asia Minor, and discussing these elements with Biblical and archaeological references. He also illustrated scientific texts with the noted geologist and President of Amherst College, Edward Hitchcock. After losing his sight in 1869, he returned to the U.S., where he spent the last twenty years of his life teaching natural sciences and languages at Ingham University, a women's college in Le Roy, New York, and later serving as co-principal at the Sedgwick Institute in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, with his son, Edward. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Book Details: Most of these antique children's books date from the first half of the 19th century, and it's interesting to compare them to children's books from the second half, which are not nearly so concerned with moral education. These earlier books also have plainer covers than the later ones, but their illustrations are more charming. With the exception of "Mitchell's Primary Geography" (which has beautiful colored maps), all of these books are by women -- since children's books were just about the only writing women were encouraged to publish. Description: Title: Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Benjamin Franklin, L. L.D.F. R.S. Minister Plenipotentiary from the United States of America to the Court of France, and for the Treaty of Peace and Independence with Great Britain, &c. Written by Himself, to a Late Period, and Continued to the Time of His Death by His Grandson, William Temple Franklin. Now First Published from the Original Manuscript, Comprising the Private Correspondence & Public Negotiations of Dr. Franklin: Together with the Whole of His Political, Philosophical, & Miscellaneous WorksAuthor: Benjamin Franklin - Dr. Benjamin Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. A noted polymath, Franklin was a leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, musician, inventor, satirist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. As a scientist, he was a major figure in the American Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer, and the glass 'armonica'. He formed both the first public lending library in America and the first fire department in Pennsylvania.Franklin earned the title of "The First American" for his early and indefatigable campaigning for colonial unity; as an author and spokesman in London for several colonies, then as the first United States Ambassador to France, he exemplified the emerging American nation. Franklin was foundational in defining the American ethos as a marriage of the practical and democratic values of thrift, hard work, education, community spirit, self-governing institutions, and opposition to authoritarianism both political and religious, with the scientific and tolerant values of the Enlightenment. In the words of historian Henry Steele Commager, "In a Franklin could be merged the virtues of Puritanism without its defects, the illumination of the Enlightenment without its heat." To Walter Isaacson, this makes Franklin "the most accomplished American of his age and the most influential in inventing the type of society America would become."Publisher: T. S.
