Antique Horse BRIDLE ROSETTES Brass Picture Glass Shank Militia Animal Bird Wolf Initial Buttons

Lot 1259: Antique Horse BRIDLE ROSETTES Brass Picture Glass Shank Militia Animal Bird Wolf Initial Buttons

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Details: This lot consists of a large, wide-ranging collection of antique horse bridle rosettes or buttons, plus some conventional antique buttons used on clothing. There are 29 bridle rosettes, and 27 of them are unique, i.e., there is just one pair in the collection. They range in size from 1-1/8" to 2-1/2" in diameter. Most of them are brass, but other materials, such as white metal or lead, plain and pictured glass, are also used. One large one shows a castle and the motto, "Vestigia nulla retrorsum," which means "Nothing remains". Another one is marked "Road Drivers Association New York." Two matching ones show large fowls, perhaps peacocks. Other devices include a three-dimensional horse's head, a early steam locomotive, a trotting sulky, a sailing ship, initials, a rope and star (marked on the back, "PA SEP 1888), eagles, a sunflower, a hawk's head (labeled on the back, "Massachusetts State Militia"), a wolf, a saddle, a dog's head, a curling leaf, and red and blue faceted glass jewels. Also included in this lot is a brooch with a painted scene under glass. This is most likely a converted bridle rosette. One horse brass, eight antique buttons, and ten silver, heart-shaped slotted conchos complete the lot. Two of the antique buttons show horses. The remainder shows a wolf, a leaping stag, a fox with the initials "P H", a naval anchor, the spread eagle symbol of the U.S. Army, and a partridge. Some of the buttons are marked on the back, "Pitt & Co. 31 Maddox St. London," "Sporting Extra Quality," "L.A. Myers, Jr. Inc. Newark, NJ." Three of the buttons have extensive markings and hallmarks which are difficult to read. The only legible word is "Colour."These items are part of the Van Lennep family estate, and five of the bridle rosettes are mounted on a ribbon to spell the name "Henry."Henry J. Van Lennep (1815-1889) was a noted nineteenth century minister, missionary, writer, illustrator, and educator. Born in Smyrna, Van Lennep was educated in the U.S. but returned to Turkey upon ordination, where he served as missionary for 29 years. During this time, he traveled extensively throughout western Asia and Egypt, aided by his proficiency in many languages. A skillful artist, he wrote and illustrated several books based on his travels. Published during a time when public curiosity about "the Orient" was high, these books were very popular, showing the scenery, people, and customs of Asia Minor, and discussing these elements with Biblical and archaeological references. He also illustrated scientific texts with the noted geologist and President of Amherst College, Edward Hitchcock. After losing his sight in 1869, he returned to the U.S., where he spent the last twenty years of his life teaching natural sciences and languages at Ingham University, a women's college in Le Roy, New York, and later serving as co-principal at the Sedgwick Institute in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, with his son, Edward. The provenance of this material can be traced directly back to Henry Van Lennep through four generations of his descendants. To inspect and acquire more detailed information about this lot, please attend our live preview before the auction.Condition / Notes: These objects are large in good or very good condition. Some of the bridle rosettes are worn, as shown in the photographs. For lots which include only books, our shipping charge applies to any address within the fifty United States. His Object Being To Examine the Grand Manufacturing Estates of the Country; and also To Find Out the Condition of Its Literature and Morals, the Extent of Its Commerce, and the Practical Operation of "The Experiment." Author: David Crockett - David "Davy" Crockett was a 19th century American folk hero, frontiersman, soldier and politician. He is commonly referred to in popular culture by the epithet "King of the Wild Frontier." He represented Tennessee in the U.S. House of Representatives, served in the Texas Revolution, and died at the Battle of the Alamo.Crockett grew up in East Tennessee, where he gained a reputation for hunting and storytelling. After being made a colonel in the militia of Lawrence County, Tennessee, he was elected to the Tennessee state legislature in 1821. In 1826, Crockett was elected to the U.S. Congress, where he vehemently opposed many of the policies of President Andrew Jackson, most notably the Indian Removal Act. Crockett's opposition to Jackson's policies led to his defeat in the 1834 elections, prompting his angry departure to Texas (then the Mexican state of Tejas) shortly thereafter. In early 1836, Crockett took part in the Texas Revolution and was killed at the Battle of the Alamo in March.Crockett became famous in his own lifetime for larger-than-life exploits popularized by stage plays and almanacs. After his death, he continued to be credited with acts of mythical proportion.
