Lot 1355: John Urry THE WORKS OF GEOFFREY CHAUCER 1721 1st Edition Landmark Publication Frontispiece Portraits Fine Engravings Glossary

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, Compared with the Former Editions, and Many Valuable MSS. out of which, Three Tales Are Added Which Were Never Before Printed; by John Urry, student of Christ-Church, Oxon. Deceased: together with a Glossary by a Student of the Same College. To the Whole Is Prefixed the Author's Life, Newly Written, and a Preface, Giving an Account of this Edition Author: Geoffrey Chaucer - Geoffrey Chaucer, known as the Father of English literature, is widely considered the greatest English poet of the Middle Ages and was the first poet to have been buried in Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey. While he achieved fame during his lifetime as an author, philosopher, alchemist and astronomer, composing a scientific treatise on the astrolabe for his ten year-old son Lewis, Chaucer also maintained an active career in the civil service as a bureaucrat, courtier and diplomat. Among his many works, which include "The Book of the Duchess," the "House of Fame," the "Legend of Good Women" and "Troilus and Criseyde," he is best known today for "The Canterbury Tales." Chaucer is a crucial figure in developing the legitimacy of the vernacular, Middle English, at a time when the dominant literary languages in England were French and Latin.Editor: John Urry - John Urry was a noted literary editor and medieval scholar of Scottish family.Matriculating from Christ Church, Oxford on June 30, 1682, he was elected to a studentship. He graduated B.A. in 1686. However (his father William was a major of the royal guards in Scotland at the Restoration, and his elder brother John fought on the Royalist side in the Civil War), the younger John Urry fought against Monmouth, and would not swear the oath of allegiance to William III on his accession, thereby losing his studentship. At the end of 1711, Christ Church's dean Francis Atterbury convinced a reluctant Urry to edit a proposed new edition of the works of Geoffrey Chaucer. Though the work was incomplete on Urry's death 4 years later (he is buried at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford) and had to be completed and revised by Timothy and William Thomas, Urry's work on it - the first edition of Chaucer to be entirely in Roman type - posthumously made his name.Publisher: Bernard LintotCity: LondonYear: 1721Printing Information: First EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: [52], 626 pages plus 78 pages of glossaryWidth: 10" Height: 15.75"Book Details: A collection of Geoffrey Chaucer's work, compiled by John Urry, with a biography of the author's life and a preface giving an account of this edition. Antique PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAPH of CONSTANTINOPLE Istanbul Turkey 19th Century Mosque Minaret

Lot 1364: Antique PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAPH of CONSTANTINOPLE Istanbul Turkey 19th Century Mosque Minaret

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Details: This magnificent antique 19th century panoramic photograph is eleven feet long (!) and 16-1/4" wide, and shows the city of Constantinople (now Istanbul), with its mosques and minarets, harbor teeming with international shipping, and the Bosporus leading to the Black Sea beyond. Judging from the seams on the panorama, it was pieced together from ten separate photographs. The panorama is difficult to date: the ships are mostly combination steam and sail ships, and there are no telephone wires or other artifacts which might help locate it in time more exactly. However, this item comes from the Van Lennep family estate, and Henry J. Van Lennep left Turkey in 1869.With the exception of the very first picture, the attached photographs show the panorama from left to right, with each photo showing one panel. If you look closely, you can see the seams.Henry J. Van Lennep (1815-1889) was a noted nineteenth century minister, missionary, writer, illustrator, and educator. Born in Smyrna, Van Lennep was educated in the U.S. but returned to Turkey upon ordination, where he served as missionary for 29 years. During this time, he traveled extensively throughout western Asia and Egypt, aided by his proficiency in many languages. A skillful artist, he wrote and illustrated several books based on his travels. Published during a time when public curiosity about "the Orient" was high, these books were very popular, showing the scenery, people, and customs of Asia Minor, and discussing these elements with Biblical and archaeological references. He also illustrated scientific texts with the noted geologist and President of Amherst College, Edward Hitchcock. After losing his sight in 1869, he returned to the U.S., where he spent the last twenty years of his life teaching natural sciences and languages at Ingham University, a women's college in Le Roy, New York, and later serving as co-principal at the Sedgwick Institute in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, with his son, Edward. The provenance of this material can be traced directly back to Henry Van Lennep through four generations of his descendants. To inspect and acquire more detailed information about this lot, please attend our live preview before the auction.Condition / Notes: As documented in the pictures, five of the ten photographic panels show damage, which ranges from very slight to severe. This panorama has been stored loosely rolled, and will curl up if not held down. For lots which include only books, our shipping charge applies to any address within the fifty United States. For lots which are not books, the stated shipping cost in this listing will apply only to addresses within the continental 48 states. UPTON SINCLAIR ORIGINAL SIGNED LETTERS Melville Kress Socialism USSR Nazism

Lot 1368: UPTON SINCLAIR ORIGINAL SIGNED LETTERS Melville Kress Socialism USSR Nazism

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Details: Although not often remembered today, Upton Sinclair was a noted writer and political activist who had a long, remarkable, and idiosyncratic career in the first half of the 20th century. The 56 original, signed letters in this collection were written between 1933 and 1958 to the working class poet Melville Kress, and have been preserved in the blue binder shown in the photographs.Upton Sinclair first made his reputation in 1906 with the publication of "The Jungle," a muck-raking novel which exposed the appalling working conditions and disgusting, dangerously unsanitary practices of the meat packing industry. Sinclair researched the book by working in a packing plant, and his observations resulted in the passage of the Pure Food and Drug and the Meat Inspection Acts. A committed democratic socialist, Sinclair went on to advocate for free speech, workers' and union rights, and to found the California chapter of the ACLU. He ran for Governor in 1934, garnering over 800,000 votes. A staunch opponent of authoritarianism and facism in any form, he also published over 100 books in many different genres, including the popular Lanny Budd series of 11 novels.Melville Kress admired Sinclair both for his political and for his literary achievements. A self-educated factory worker and aspiring writer, Kress began corresponding with Sinclair, who invited him to review chapters of the Lanny Budd novels as they were written. Many of the letters in this lot respond to Kress's suggestions for the manuscripts. The books sold well, and the third volume in the series, "Dragon's Teeth," which chronicles the rise of Nazi Germany, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1942.These letters refer to other topics as well. Sinclair writes on a variety of subjects, including his meetings with H.G. Wells in 1906 and Wells's reaction to his biography; and with Peter Kropotkin at Bernarr Mcfadden's sanitarium in 1913. He recalls prominent members of the Fabian Society, including "the Shaws." Sinclair wonders if his acquaintance with magazine editor Fulton Oursler and with another working-class socialist, James Fuchs, might help Kress. He responds to Thomas Mann's novel, "The Magic Mountain," and denounces Sergei Eisenstein (recruited by Charlie Chaplin, Sinclair and his wife produced one of Eisenstein's movies). Sinclair's reactions to the Nazi-Soviet Pact, the Soviet invasion of Finland, and to the events of the Second World War are also recorded. At different times Sinclair reflects on the principles, purpose, and nature of socialism, particularly in relation to developments in the Soviet Union. The last letter in this collection articulates the author's bitter disappointment at recent revelations made by Krushchev about the role of the USSR during the 1940s and 1950s, and its policies and oppression of Hungary and of Russian Jews.Upton Sinclair died in 1968 at the age of ninety. Long before his death, Mel Kress began a political biography of Sinclair, which remained incomplete and unpublished until 2005, when it was posthumously published by AuthorHouse under the title, "Mightier Than the Sword." Van Lennep (1815-1889) was a noted nineteenth century minister, missionary, writer, illustrator, and educator.
