A bright copy. Ex libris Hale of Alderley, Glos, with bookplate to front pastedown of each volume. Described as "one of the finest scientific travel books of the 19th century" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography), this work was recommended for publication by Charles Darwin, and is an important contribution to the study of the Origin of Species. The expedition undertaken jointly by Henry Bates and Alfred Russell Wallace, commenced in 1848, and only ended with return of Bates in July 1859. (2)
