JÖRG IMMENDORFF, Brrr, 1978

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Emulsion paint on canvas 120 x 120 cm, framed. Signed and dated 'Immendorff 78' right margin and titled 'Brrr' lower middle. To be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné compiled by Siegfried Gohr and Michael Werner.Provenance: Galerie Kewenig, Cologne (label verso)Exhibition: Turin 1990 (Castello di Rivara), Aspetti e Pratiche dell'Arte Europea, exhib.cat., n.p. with ill.To make an ironical comment on current affairs, Immendorff used two symbolical animals: the monkey and the eagle. Heinz Althöfer says about the artist's moral statement:"When he reports on the present day, he does not do so as a painting historian. On the other hand, no one reports on history more objectively than the artist who is a subjective reporter of history. He interprets it and responds emotively to certain issues that concern all of us and which we deal with. He is a painter with a responsibility of his own and for whom depiction is more than just a moral stance. [...] Yet the depiction is not a confrontation with a Sunday experience, but an invitation and opportunity to become actively involved. It is an aggressive art and one that provokes discussion." (Heinz Althöfer, Die Moral der Malkunst, in: Tayfun Belgin (ed.), Immendorff, Bilder, exhib. cat., Museum am Ostwall, Dortmund, Heidelberg 2000, p.43)

JÖRG IMMENDORFF, Den Hahn wecken, 1996

Lot 619: JÖRG IMMENDORFF, Den Hahn wecken, 1996

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas 250 x 250 cm. Signed and dated 'Immendorff 96' lower right and titled 'Den Hahn wecken' lower margin. - The edges sporadically with slight craquelure. To be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné compiled by Siegfried Gohr and Michael Werner.Between 1994 and 1997 Jörg Immendorf repeatedly took an interest in William Hogarth's satirical series of paintings "A Rake's Progress" (1733-35), which was about the dubious life of a rich heir called Tom Rakewell who squandered away his fortune and eventually lost his mind. Working for the Salzburg Festival, Immendorf designed a stage set for Igor Stravinsky's slightly modified operatic version of "The Rake's Progress" (1951), and in subsequent years he continued to focus on this theme in paintings, drawings and prints. All these works served the purpose of critical and provocative self-reflection, as Immendorf merged his own personality with that of the "rake".

Lot 631: DIETER KRIEG, Untitled (Spiegelei), 1995/1996

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Acrylic and spray paint on plexiglas 98 x 264 cm.Provenance: Private Collection, GermanyThe painting is illustrated on the cover sheet of the art calendar, Dieter Krieg, Spiegelei, Verlag Engelhardt & Bauer. There signed and dated 'Krieg 96'.In his paintings Dieter Krieg repeatedly deals with the subject of food, using a range of painterly resources in each series. In the text that accompanies the 1997 calendar, Juliane Huber writes: "Like elsewhere, the painter pulled out all the stops in his Fried Egg series. He added material emphasis to the presence of colour through an abundant use of acrylic (particularly in evidence in the egg white), created illusionist effects through sprayed shadows, intensified the colour effect by integrating Perspex into the surface, painted the subject as a complete view, thus further enhancing its presence - in other words, Krieg explored the full range of options that seemed important to him as an artist. Nevertheless, no two paintings are alike. All of them have the same thing in common: the fried egg theme is isolated from its natural context, hovering in front of differently designed backgrounds - unreal, like flying saucers. Apart from that, each picture is a case of its own." (Juliane Huber, in: Dieter Krieg, Spiegelei, 1997, Kunstkalender des Verlags Engelhardt & Bauer)

Description: Oil on canvas 115 x 195 cm. Reverse of the canvas dated and titled 'L'insecte 1980/84' along with dimensions and directional arrow. Provenance: Galerie Michael Werner, Köln; Private possession, GermanyExhibitions: Cologne 1989 (Rheinhallen), Bilderstreit, Widerspruch, Einheit und Fragment in der Kunst seit 1960, exhib.cat.no.377 Villeneuve 1987 (Musée d'Art Moderne D'ASCQ), Eugene Leroy„For a long time i could only feel I was getting somewhere in my work if the canvases had already been painted and scraped. The white canvas that I had to use when I inevitably began to think about working systematically, led me to a "watercoloured" and stained system, but with a growing dissatisfaction that took me to the matter (rather than the manner) I have today, until, out of exhaustion, as far as I am concerned, what I have done and tried to say represents something that other people see [...].I always take several colours on my brush at the same time. I don't mix them on the palette in order to find the value, but put them directly on the canvas. And so the brush always holds traces that are still quite rich of a shade applied before with a dominant colour. This tone forms a matteness beneath an intense, vivid colour, the last one taken from the palette, and thus provides a certain mixture for the eye which is what I'm looking for."
