Description: Oil on canvas 73.5 x 92 cm, framed. Signed and dated lower right 'Nay. 56'. Scheibler 800 Provenance: Galerie Der Spiegel, Cologne; Private Collection, Germany Exhibition: Cologne 1957, Galerie Der Spiegel, E.W. Nay, Ölbilder, Aquarelle, Zeichnungen, exhib.cat.no.14 Ernst Wilhelm Nay focused on the use of colour as a medium - not just on canvas, but also in theoretical writings. In 1955 he published a treatise entitled "Vom Gestaltwert der Farbe - Fläche, Zahl und Rhythmus" (The creative value of colour - area, number and rhythm). He writes: "In each painting I must recognise a certain range of colours conclusively and in such a way that this produces a characteristic chromatic set for that painting. The set must be observed uniquely for each painting. I can implement this set in primary colours, in diametrical colour contexts, or in colours in one or more tonal values. With this in mind, I must use certain preferred variations of primary colours, i.e. elementary tones with cold/warm contrasts on the one hand and light/dark contrasts on the other, and I must provide a light set of tonal values with the intention of keeping the relevant colour structure cool. Black and white are effectively colours within the chromatic set." (Ernst Wilhelm Nay, Vom Gestaltwert der Farbe - Fläche, Zahl und Rhythmus, in: Magdalene Claesges (ed.), E.W. Nay, Lesebuch, Selbstzeugnisse und Schriften 1931-1968, Cologne 2002, p.123).

A.R. PENCK, Untitled, 1982

Lot 682: A.R. PENCK, Untitled, 1982

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas 145 x 180 cm. Signed 'ar. penck' (later) lower left. Provenance: Galerie Michael Werner, Cologne; Galerie Hans Strelow, Düsseldorf; Private Collection, GermanyThis painting by A.R. Penck was created two years after the East German authorities had cancelled his citizenship. His move to West Germany was accompanied by a change in style, as his paintings became freer and less constrained. "The change in imagery and technique after Penck's move to the West in 1980 was partly due to his wider scope in terms of colour and material. After his reduced use of resources and sparing application of acrylic latex in East Germany, he started to use oil and acrylic extremely extravagantly. The very act of painting was now important, and as it became possible to overpaint, to change and to deconstruct a painting, he began to create relief-like surfaces and opted for an impasto brushstroke." (Ingrid Pfeiffer, Ein bekannter Unbekannter - Aktuelle Blicke auf A.R. Penck, in: Ingrid Pfeiffer and Max Hollein (ed.), A.R. Penck, Retrospektive, exhib.cat.) Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt et al., Düsseldorf 2007, p.47).

We are grateful to The Estate of Sigmar Polke, Cologne, for the verbal confirmation of authenticity on 5.10.2012.The collage served as a draft for the exhibition poster: Sigmar Polke, Remix, Neue Arbeiten auf Papier, Haus der Kunst, München 17.11.1995 - 21.01.1996 (cf. von der Osten/Becker 113)Exhibition: Munich 1995/1996 (Haus der Kunst), Sigmar Polke, Remix, Neue Arbeiten auf PapierThe art historian Gunter Schweikhart on Sigmar Polke's oeuvre:"The elements that create a distance from everyday imagery in Polke's paintings are formal quality and density of content. Yet again and again we believe that the countless figures, objects and locations are things we have seen before, in real life. After all, they are so replete with reality. Unmistakably, however, their fictitiousness is equally much in evidence, translating into imagery things that have haunted us as either chimeras or wishful thinking. Reality does work out within the picture, yet not without revealing rather embarrassingly the extent to which trivialities have become central. [...] Polke's drawings and paintings are about the way we deal with imagery and, going further, with reality, with people and with actual objects. Many of his paintings are therefore designed to destroy or change our viewing habits, to make us perceive the way we handle imagery - something that has long been out of control - and to mobilise our forces against an endless abundance of trivialities. This is what creates Polke's intensity - his broad bandwidth of shapes and themes, an ongoing attempt to charge life and perception with maximum intensity. As we become engaged in Polke's art, our perspectives and our perception change, and indeed not just in what is conveyed through the imagery. Hardly any other contemporary who is concerned about this world has taken the identity of life and art as far as he did." The integration was not as successful. While it is true that a mirror is like a camera that creates a print of reality, a print for just that one instant that you stand in front of it, the actual photograph did not integrate with the actual reflection of other things seen in the mirror as you were looking at the photograph. The process of serigraphy created an image that seemed to be coming out the mirror space, rather than sitting on top of it. At the same time, it was not subjective like paint, although it created a little more of an atmosphere. The serigraphic figure created an ambiguous transitional plane between the space of the room where the viewer was standing and the background of the painting which was a reflection of the room. Still, it was objective and impersonal like the mirror. When you looked at the painting, it was hard to tell what was reflection and what was printed image. The only way to tell without touching the surface was to move. When you moved, the reflection would change. Then you realised that this pictorial space was animated by the life in the room, not just by the image applied to the mirror. I titled some of the early, reflective self-portraits The Present. I realised that what I was working with, in a larger sense, was time. It wasn't just about exploring my own image but the relationship between myself and the world in time. It became less about trying to create a universal and timeless image and more about projecting a series of moments."
