H89" W42" D21" Provenance: Emily Seymour Goodwin Holcombe (1852-1923) early Connecticut preservationist, by descent to present owner, an Asheville, North Carolina private collector Other Notes: Emily Seymour Goodwin Holcombe (1852-1923) played an influential role in the preservation of Connecticut's history. Holcombe, a Connecticut native, had a deep sense of pride in her home state and sought to encourage others to adopt an appreciation for its colonial past. During what came to be known as the Colonial Revival, Americans began to recognize the importance of preserving the history of their country amidst the intensive changes brought on by the industrialization of their cities. Holcombe was a pioneer of this effort, and supported many organizations and preservation efforts in Connecticut. A founder of the Ruth Wyllys Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she served as regent from its inception in 1892 until 1903. During her tenure there, Holcombe sought to restore the Ancient Burying Ground of Hartford, a task in which she was immensely successful. In addition to founding a chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Holcombe also helped found the Connecticut Society of Colonial Dames of America. Holcombe used her influence in these societies to help with the development of historic home museums and preservation of the Old State House, and also fought for the nickname of Connecticut to be changed to the Constitution State, to better acknowledge the state's rich history than its prior nickname of the Nutmeg State. Holcombe's preservation efforts are remembered to this day.

H32" W36" D21" Provenance: Emily Seymour Goodwin Holcombe (1852-1923) early Connecticut preservationist, by descent to present owner, an Asheville, North Carolina private collector. Other Notes: Emily Seymour Goodwin Holcombe (1852-1923) played an influential role in the preservation of Connecticut's history.
