Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ROGER T. WILLIAMS,, American, born Waukegan, Illinois, 1903, died Oconomowoc, WI, 1999, "Eve" wood sculpture in mahogany, 20"x7"x11", signed R.T. Williams, The legend of Roger T Williams begins when he commenced sculpting in 1925 at age 11, First, commercially to support himself and wife, Idella. He seriously began sculpting in wood and stone in 1963. By 1988, some 25 years later, Roger and Idella felt it best to liquidate a large quantity of sculptures and furnishings. In September, 1988, Schrager Auction Galleries liquidated over 150 examples of his art at public auction here on Sherman Boulevard. Not all of his sculptures were sold at this time. Two pieces of sculpture were given to a relative, who now finds it is time to offer these two works, one of which is Eve. This is a second version of the sculpture "Eve". The first version was featured on the cover of "Chip Chats", the magazine for the National Sculpture Society, September/October, 1981, It was 16" tall and 11" in diameter (see exhibIt 1,2). Our offering of "Eve" is 20" tall 7" wide & 11" deep. This version of "Eve" does not exhibit the serpent and the apple. Roger Williams has been a member of the National Sculpture Society and exhibited as early as 1971, "Man's Best Friend". He also exhibited "Stubby", a draft horse that was purchased by the President of the National Sculpture Society. In 1972, he was elected as member of the society. Since then he has won numerous awards and has been exhibited regularally in Wisconsin. (see exhibits) We quote from "Chip Chats", Vol 28, No4, July, August 1981, page 3. "Without formal education in art, Mr Williams, who is 78 Years old (85 as of today), has fathomed the mystique of correct proportions in regard to human and animal anatomy. With Mallet and chisel, he strikingly translates this knowledge into vibrant, inspiring figures that captivates the beholder's attention, holding him (her) in awe".
