Description: Shane Cotton Untitled acrylic on canvas signed with initials; signed and dated 1995 verso 610 x 455mm The paintings of Shane Cotton are some of the most successful and accomplished works by artists who are acknowledging their Maori cultural roots and values. Trained at the Canterbury School of Art, Cotton at first showed little interest in his Maori lineage. This changed dramatically in 1993 when he consciously started to draw on subjects and motifs that explored his Maori identity. In doing so he was influenced by his appointment to a teaching position at Massey University where he worked alongside Robert Jahnke in establishing a Maori Visual Arts course. His style changed from abstraction to figurative with obvious derivations from imagery derived from 19th century Maori art, especially the paintings of the famed meeting house Rongopai near Gisborne. He combines in the present example elements that derive from the 19th century colonisation process with references to traditional Maori forms. The depiction of a coastal profile in the centre of the image refers to the recording and surveying of land by the settlers and their subsequent acquisition of vast tracts for their use. Cotton's painting packages topical and contentious issues in a way that is visually appealing as well as thought provoking.Michael Dunn
