Description: [Amsterdam]. Pontanus, J.I. Rerum et urbis Amstelodamensium historia. Amst., J. Hondius, 1611, (6),38,(2),292,(6)p., engr. title, 50 almost half-page textengrs. (incl. 17 maps), modern gilt marbled calf, folio. - Lacks the maps, plans and plate; partly washed/ bleached; engr. title-p. sl. dam. in outer margin, doubled and washed; most leaves stained in outer margins, occas. also in the text. = Nijhoff/ Van Hattum 252; Tiele 876; Sabin 64002; Alden & Landis II, 611/91; Chavanne 116. First edition of the earliest history and description of the city of Amsterdam, of great influence on similar publications of later date. But at least as important for the incorporated extensive accounts of Dutch maritime trade and early Dutch exploration and navigation ±1594-1611. It contains for instance the famous report of Willem Barentsz' voyages to the Arctic region in search of a North-East passage to Asia (1594-1597), derived from De Veer's Diarium nauticum as well as from Van Linschoten's Diarium, illustrated with 8 textengravings. For the earliest reports of the Dutch explorations of Asia, including the famous voyage of Corn. de Houtman as well as for the descriptions of the Moluccas (i.a. of Banda & Ternate), Cape of Good Hope, Madagascar, the Coast of Guinee (etc.), the chapters 24, 25 and 26 (p.144-218) are of the greatest importance. The fine engravings in the text, starting with no.17 to no.49, include early maps and views of Madagascar, Banda and Indonesia (i.a. Java, Bantam and Bali), and of its flora and fauna. The Dutch edition was published three years later in 1614.

Description: [Blake, W.]. Blair, R. The Grave. A Poem. London, T. Bensley, 1808, XIV,36,(4)p., orig. etched title and 11 orig. etched plates by L. SCHIAVONETTI after W. BLAKE, orig. etched portrait of W. Blake by L. SCHIAVONETTI after T. PHILLIPS, 20th cent. gilt hcalf, folio. - Textpages trifle/ sl. yellowed; etchings trifle/ sl. soiled/ foxed (mainly in blank margins). = Essick p.159: "In October 805, the engraver and publisher R.H. Cromek commissioned Blake to design and execute illustrations for an edition of Robert Blair's The Grave. (...) This attempt at integrating bold, experimental graphics into a commercially produced letterpress book resulted in one of Blake's most crushing disappointments in the publishing business. Only a few connoisseurs with the most unconventional tastes would have been attracted by such a volume. (...) Given the pecuniary interests of a man like Cromek, it is no wonder that he turned over Blake's drawings to a competent craftsman for fashionable reproduction. Louis Schiavonetti's rendition of (...) Blake's designs in Cromek's 1808 edition of The Grave cannot be charged with total insensitivity to the original. Schiavonetti has not overburdened the design with excessive crosshatching or refined away all its power with delicate strokes. (...) By translating the design into a visual language accessible to a wider audience, and thereby accomodating it to the very system rejected in Blake's relief graphics, Schiavonetti insured that the Grave illustrations would become Blake's best-known designs through the nineteenth century and well into the next."
