Lot 1407: Dulles Sanctus (= Thomas van den Eynde). Lammen in

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Dulles Sanctus (= Thomas van den Eynde). (1790), (2),42p., modern hcl. - Library stamps on htitle, title and first textleaf, otherwise fine. = Very rare, only one copy in NCC. Satirical political work on the (Belgian) Brabant revolution ("Brabantse Omwenteling") of 1789-1790, in the form of a fictional dialogue between Lammen, citizen of Mechelen and a man on the moon, called Alipius. The 'Brabantse Omwenteling' culminated in the short lived republic 'Verenigde Nederlandse Staten', under governance of Hendrik van der Noot. Due to tensions between the more progressive democratic movement under Jan Frans Vonck (Vonckisten) and the more conservative faction under Van der Noot (Statisten), it was not a big succes. After Joseph II was succeeded by Leopold II, the Habsburgers, after some negotiations, regained control of the southern Netherlands. In this work Lammen tries to escape all the turmoil and ends up on the moon. To provide for his income, he has brought books to sell (because they sell well in the Netherlands, due to "'Boeckwormen"), to which Alipius reacts: "Botterikken zoo veel als gy wilt, zy en syn eventwel nog zoo erg niet als hier want hier noemt men de Boekwormen Bibliomaniaci, en de Boekwormerye Bibliomania, ende men aensiet het als eene siekte, de welke noodsaekelyk moet genesen worden (...)". Then Lammen shows the list of works/ pamphlets he has brought with him and for obvious reasons all are on the conflict described above. Then the dialogue centers on the content of each work/ pamphlet on the list. The list mentions all works in relation to Mechelen and the 'Omwenteling'. Written by the 'Vonckist' Thomas van den Eynde from Mechelen, who also promotes pamphlets on the list written by himself.

(Henze). "Denon's work has been justly praised. As a member of the Commission des Sciences et Arts which accompanied Napoleon's expedition to Egypt, he remained in Egypt for thirteen months, working continuously to record the Egyptian monuments. He was the first to reveal the richness of Egyptian art to Europe." (Atabey).
