19th century silver pair of Dutch sconces.

Lot 363: 19th century silver pair of Dutch sconces.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Nineteenth century Dutch silver pair of small wall sconces, each back plate embossed with a classical figurative scene with central female figure, within a border inscribed 'Paulus de Viana fecit et Inve', the outer border with lion mask motifs, with three branches each leading to a cylindrical socket with conforming lion mask decoration. Struck with Dutch lion passant mark with Arabic numeral 2 for .833 fineness, two further marks and a date letter possibly for 1852, Minerva head struck to some of the sockets. Each fitted to a shaped wood wall mount. Approximate height of silver section measures 6 inches (15 cm). The inscription probably relates to late 16th/early 17th century Dutch silversmith Paulus van Vianen and the scene on the sconces is possibly after an original by him. The central figure is possibly Diana, goddess of hunting, or the goddess Athena.

Condition Report: The sconces display general surface scratches, marks and wear commensurate with the age and use. Heavy tarnishing is visible to some areas and they would benefit from a clean and polish. Some loss of detail to the decoration and some of the finer details of the figures. Some of the branches are a little out of shape and a couple of the socket rims are a little misshapen. There is partial distortion to some of marks but some are still legible. They are now quite loose on the wood mounts. A later amendment to the condition report - the join between the base of the back plate and the three branches does appear quite crude. The branches are fixed behind so that it cannot lie flat. It is possible that there have been alterations. In addition, on one of the wooden mounts there is a circular ring mark visible near the top, probably from a previous fixing.
