Provenance: 'To His Royal Highness Prince Edward (sic) / You would never be able to read my late / brother's handwriting. Your contribution / to allow this book to be dedicated to you / and support was invaluable / Mary Baines, Mar 1878'. H.R.H. Prince Alfred (1844-1900), Duke of Edinburgh and later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, second son of Queen Victoria, naval officer, and, according to the dedication of the present work 'the first of England's royal race who has landed upon the shores of South Africa'.
