Description: HENRI MATISSE (french 1869-1954)/span "VIERGE ET ENFANT" 1950-1951, pencil signed, dated and numbered 105/200. Lithograph on chine collé. sheet: 19 15/16 x 14 7/8 in. (50.6 x 37.8cm) [Duthuit 653].

Condition Report: The print is moderately soiled overall, particularly at top left. On the verso, darker horizontal striations are visible from contact with an acidic board. The print and the signature at bottom right are darker than the rest of the support paper due to light damage from the mat window openings. Previous water damage has caused multiple dark brown tidelines across the top and right half of the print. There are extensive dark brown foxing stains across the print, concentrated along the right half,. The print has developed horizontal undulations and cockling overall due to moisture damage. On verso, rubber based pressure sensitive tapes line the top and side edges. Some of this tape has been removed and has resulted in skinning. The folded bottom edge is attached to the back of the print with three small pieces of the same tape. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Sotheby Parke-Bernet, New York, Sale #4304, lot 957, November 9, 1979, lot 957. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. literature:/span Spies, Werner and G. Metken, Max Ernst: Werke 1925-1929, Cologne, Germany, 1976, p. 135, no. 1053 (illustrated). note:/span While confined to bedrest during an illness in 1925, Max Ernst is said to have noticed and studied the patterns emerging from wood grains and other natural surfaces in his home. This prompted experimentation in a new technique, 'frottage' in which he rubbed surfaces with graphite or crayon and explored what images would suggest themselves. In 1926 he took this a step further by applying paint and scraping it away when it was nearly dry, leaving a textured surface which he termed 'grattage.' The present work, executed that same year and depicting a quintessential Ernst subject, is a fascinating look into the artist's evolving technique that was so influential to the surrealist movement as a whole.
