A complete copy with the two large fold out colour maps one of which has been professionally repaired. Taurus number 25 notes " The original cloth binding of this first issue is quite friable, with the result that few copies survive in truly fine condition. Apparently the fault was soon noticed , as a second issue was produced that year bound in a more durable red cloth. There ia a very small amount of wear to the cloth. Still a very good copy with 3 colour foldout maps with another textual map, 18 full page photographic plates, and 183 textual illustrations some of which are photographic.. The attractive front cover has an image of a ship on ice and done in gilt and silver. This is the first UK edition, the only prior edition being the Norwegian.. This was a Norwegian expedition which was financed by the UK publisher George Newnes. Borchgrevink made a number of "First claims: The use of dogs on te Antarctic continent, the first sledge journey on the Ross Ice Shelf, the furtherest south travelled. Taurus 24
